I need a little advice on how to approach getting my security deposit back.
I live in PA, and rented an apartment for 10 years, no complaints. Due to a hectic past few months, verbally gave my landlord the news I would be out by March 1st. A week into Feb. she told me she needed it in writing, which I immediately did. I was out March 1, and wrote an email to landlord (also copied my attorney) with all forwarding info for the deposit (and 10 years interest), but still have not gotten any response, or the deposit money. PA law is the landlord has 30 days to either give the deposit (plus any interest) back, or provide a written list of reasons why all/some of the deposit will be kept (repairs, damages, etc.---and I did leave the apartment in excellent condition). It is also clearly written on my lease that the deposit CAN NOT be used for the last months rent (like I said, I verbally told her, but then put it in writing a week into Feb.). Per PA law, if the deposit is not returned in 30 days, and no written reason why it isn't, the deposit amount is doubled. My question is (as I have had no contact with my old landlord to this point..), what would be the best way to; a. get my deposit money, and b. should I push for double the amount since they have not contacted me in any way (phone, email, snail mail, smoke signal, etc.). Does anyone have any knowledge of this situation, and how I should best proceed?? Thanks to all in advance.
