Gun buy back

There is going to be a gun buy back program in Minneapolis this Friday. One of the buyers (whatever U want to call them) was on the radio this morning.

No questions asked. If the gun was used in a murder, the police will not be allowed to ask questions or try to figure out who brought the gun to the thing. If the gun is found to be stolen property there will be no attempt made to return it to its rightful owner. The guns will be melted down and made into a statue.

This is like a get out of jail free card.

You should go outbid whomever is organizing the buyback. Some really nice guns get turned in and then made into manhole covers. Damn shame. These publicity stunts do not prevent a single crime and are a great way for criminals to dispose of evidence.

How much do they offer? Could a guy go get a bunch of those crap-o Saturday-night special .22s and turn them in for a profit?

In Phoenix they were offering $100 gift cards to the local grocery store. At the time you could buy Mosin Nagants locally for $69, cheaper if in bulk. So someone could easily buy 10 and make a $300 profit. When the cops here ran out of gift cards, folks started offering cash in the parking lots before the cops turned them away.

These gun buybacks are predatory in nature. The idea is to disarm the public without knocking door-to-door "You have any firearms in the house?". As stated above, it really only "helps" the criminals who need to dispose of a murder weapon.

How does disarming you make you safer? If you've got a junk gun that's broken and not worth fixing, this may be a good idea. Otherwise, keep your working firearms and buy more bullets.

I've got a Cobra .380 stashed somewhere that anyone is more than welcome to for $100. I don't care if you melt it down, heck I'd feel better about that because I sure don't trust the POS.

I don't know about that. It's strictly voluntary and 99.9% of the guns turned in are barely workable and usually rusted heaps of junk. Obviously, no one who values their gun gives it up for $100 or basketball tix. My only problem with it is the part that lets criminals dispose of crime weapons and the politicians then claiming they've done something about gun violence.

When I went to the Phoenix gun buyback, I watched a cop car pull up with a back seat full of guns in plastic evidence bags. It was a sight to behold. I don't know that I buy the bit about their not checking those guns out. They probably don't check out the rusted Turkish Mauser. But if it's a Glock or a SIG or a Tec-9, yeah, I'm pretty sure they look into those. At the very least, such in-demand guns are likely to be stolen, if not crime weapons.

There's talk on some gun boards saying that the cops have a few "ringers" to pull out of the trunk for photo ops!

Streetsweeper shotguns, MAC-10's etc.

Sad thing is is that they destroy all. I did see a nice 1911 in a photo getting smelted

The cops don't like that, and they get pretty pissed about it, don't ask me how I know.....

They didn't like it here either, but there was nothing they could do about it. Buying and selling guns in the police station parking lot is totally legal here between non-prohibited possessors who are both AZ residents. We got chased away by the cops from a church parking lot when they complained. But we just went back to the police station and continued there. They didn't bother us there at all and a few of my buddies scored a CZ-52 and a Bersa .380 for $100 each.

We had a "Buy back" on the news last summer at the Sheriff's station near Compton, Ca which isn't very safe at night.. Anyhow the media aired images of Mac10s (11s), long rifles, misc hand guns and the amazing site of 9 or 10 Ar-15's! Yes, some person gave up a hole bunch of AR's!

BTW, you cant just post up and attempt to purchace firearms from people that are offering them to the fuzz.

They are giving $50.00 for revolvers and $100.00 for semi-auto's

When asked why the difference in price, the lady said "because Semi-auto's hold more ammo and this makes them more dangerous.

we disposed of a little pot metal 22 revolver that the gun store wouldn't buy. while we were there, a grandpa came in with a M1 carbine to dispose of. The cops and us were in awe. I asked the cop jokingly if that one could disappear from the junk pile. He told me "I wish! That thing's a nice piece!"

Boy, I would have thought he'd have told you he was going to grab it as soon as you leave...
