Thought that guns were illegal in Chicago? Someone there would steal a gun? Who woulda thunk? Must be a criminal loose...

Sorry to see it happen.

i'm not IN chicago. beside the chicago handgun ban was repealed recently.

i wasn't even in chicago. i was out in the boonies at the shooting range. it's despicable!!! that's like going to a car show and getting your car stolen at the show.

How was this range set up?

Bout the only way someone could steal one at my range is if you walked away and left your stuff.

That's why I hit the head before taking a spot.

long shot (no pun intended) but maybe the guy/gal next to you picked it up by mistake? I've done that at the sporting clays course picking up a similar gun in the rack. Good luck, sucks ballz if there was a thief there.

Sorry to hear that.

I am thinking that has got to take a brass set to steal a spoon at the range. Imagine if that guy got caught in the act...

I bet someone grabbed it by mistake. Post a note at the range and I bet whoever it was returns it.

How formal and well established of a "range" is it? Club range with a sign-in sheet, video cameras, any of that? Or just an informal "range" at a gravel pit?

range setup is pretty good. we were at the pit with tables and gun racks. signin at the office and range safety officers at each area. no video cameras at the range itself though.

yea i posted note at the range already.

this gun was malfunctioning so we boxed it and put it behind us. didn't think of it until we packed up for the day and started clearing the tables. noticed then that i was 1 box short.
we never left our table area. there was 5 of us...but we were pretty focused on the forward

If someone picked it up by mistake, then wouldn't that mean they left a gun behind? I had a very expensive guitar get picked up at a gig once, where, while bands were switching equipment on the stage, we all had our stuff in a pile together. Luckily, I saw the guy walking out with it and stopped him. Totally honest mistake and he left his own guitar behind in a case that looked a lot like mine. But who knows? He could have gotten home, opened it up and realized he suddenly had a much more expensive guitar and then decided to keep it.

I'll bring half a dozen rifles to the range at times. When my two sons tag along, it's not unusual for each of us to have that many. While hauling stuff from the car to the benches and back, we all just grab arm loads of stuff. If we are meeting friends there, and they are bringing a number of rifles each, we can wind up with a pretty good pile of gun cases. I'm amazed that in all these years of doing this, that we actually have not managed to mix them up and either grab someone else's or have someone else grab ours.

Is access retsricted to only those who have signed in? In other words, can someone just casually walk out to the live part of the range without showing credentials (membership card or driver's license for guests) at the range office?

I think if someone picked it up by mistake there should have been another spoon laying around.

Does the range have a sign in sheet? IF only 20 people that where at the range it shouldn't be TOO hard to narrow it down.

The range that I normaly go to has 100's of people at on a busyday.

My Sons think that I'm lazy when I do not go down range to shag targets!

I had to explain to them that there's $7k sitting on the table one day.

naw access is open. u can just drive in past the office and not sign in. it's honor system. if somebody did just grab it by accident, i would pray they'd call the range within the next week.

I know the range you were at and it sucks that someone would walk off with someone else's rifle. The pit can be a mayhem of activities sometimes. I alwas worry when I have my kids there and have to be extremely watchful of other's actions. I alas try to set up far away from the masses.

For those wondering, it is entirely possible for someone to just drive pass the office at that range and show up at the firing line without signing in, especially at the pit which is the least regulated of the four stations at that range.

I hope something positive comes from this for you. Best of luck.

The range I go to issues gate keys to members and is wa down a dirt road and very easy to miss if you don't know where you're going. Most of our members are prior or current service and the boss man is very selective about new members.

Me too. Video surveilance and everything. It's a couple hundred bucks per year, but well worth it. There are very strict rules on admittance, gun handling, firing cadance (no rapid fire on the pistol range, only load one round at a time on the rifle range, even in semi-autos) and even marksmanship. If you can't stay on the paper, you can't stay on the range - more of a problem on the handgun range, where the closest target is 25 yards (the indoor range "combat" crowd seems to have a particularly hard time with this one - the guys that think a fist-sized "group" at 7 yards is awesome).

I do shoot in an uncontroled gravel pit as well. Range rules are not condusive to informal plinking and the like. In the gravel pit I'm on high alert - no telling who will show up and what "gun safety" habits they bring. Both environments have their plusses and minusses...
