Why I love Estate sales - Auctions
It’s the thrill of the hunt. The discovery of something ‘missed’ by the auctioneers, something left in the bottom of some box or old suitcase. But usually they do a good job of finding interesting items and listing them in the auction flyers. Here are a couple of my latest purchases:
This trike, along with several others, was suspended from the ceiling of an automotive shop. It collected layers of dust for many years. ![]() And after a quick rinse with the hose: ![]() Unusual, in that it has a grab-bar and small platform for a second passenger to ride on, behind the driver. The head stamp (logo) is missing and I see no identifying marks. If anyone recognizes it (brand/approximate year) please chime in. My other recent find - some leaflets dropped on American troops during WWII. Every war features some type of PSYOP operations. Each side attempting to influence the enemy, cause homesickness, jealously, rage, trying to make the enemy lose the will to continue the fight - or even surrender. Sometimes the content is sexual, or racist, political or class envy. Here are the three I just purchased from a veterans estate: ![]() The wife/girlfriend pleads: “Please! Come back. Don’t die. It’s terrible to be dead. We need each other. It would be awful if you’re crippled. I wouldn’t know what to do if you were.” ( The background of the writing - is a field of human skulls. ) ![]() On the reverse side are the directions - how to surrender. ![]() This one shows two solders wading ashore and a man and a woman kissing. The ‘girlfriend’ writes: “You above all men. Do you have to bear the brunt of this war alone and for so long? You never seem to think of me. I’m lonesome without you. Tom has come home months ago. And Thomas still admires me as you know. Sometimes, I really do lose confidence in myself…” * A handwritten note (up the side of this item) from the WWII veteran who mailed it home states: “The Japs think we will give up by printing things like this.” ![]() This one shows a ‘businessman/wall-street type’ surrounded by large buildings pushing the soldier forward, as the soldier seems to push back from the “Unknown” grave marker on some remote isle. It states: “Framed. You did not want to fight. You did not want to leave your sweetheart, your mother, your kids… You did not think it would ever be necessary for you to dig your own grave … He did it all for you!” _______________ More on the subject here: Japanese PSYOP During WWII Here’s to the Greatest Generation!

The trike may have had a small bench seat at one time. Or those bolt holes may be for an optional carry box or basket. I see a sprung seat, Very cool!
Wanna sell it? |

I love auctions, but more and more you get idiots that have no idea of the value of anything and way over bid. The other thing I hate is how long some of the auctions go on for.

I concur with you guys. Two holes in the rear frame indicate there was once a rear passenger seat/bench. Yes - a 'springer' seat
Quote: "Wanna sell it?' Milt - although I do purchase pedal cars and such for resale - I think I will keep this one for my personal collection. It will join this one Milt: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/407610-anyone-familiar-3-wheeler.html ( * Some day - at OUR ESTATE SALE - someone will have a lot of fun. ) ___________ Another recent find: ![]() Original box ( marked $1.98 ).

+1 to that. I was at an auction last week where two jacka$$es got into a bidding war and an old KoC hat worth about $70 in it's condition went for $250. Crap like that happens all the time, then I pick up an old set of Arms and Armour books for $150 and they get accepted for auction at Sotheby's. Or I pick up two 1779 copper plate maps for $5 each, retail ~$600 each.

Since I have been going to auctions somebody is always complaining about some idiot overpaying for stuff...I do notice that people are not very friendly towards me and glare a lot...
I watch a lot of Spoon auctions...at a recent auction up in MN..a dealer paid $5000 for a new production Winchester Mdl 42 NIB....he could have gone to Conitticut Valley Shotguns and paid $2900. At the same auction I bought a High Standard Supermatic in 98& condition for $310 delivered. At the same auction I bought the reloading stuff 2 High Standard Victors went for a $1000 each plus commmish...while in SF several weeks ago you could of bought 5 early HS for $1500..cond being equal and desirabilty being actually higher for the early spoons. This weekend someone paid $100 for a Tipton Gun Vise....U could buy the same Vise new at Midway for $50.00????? This last week a Itacha 20GA Classic 4E went for $4520,00 while Conitticut Valley Shotguns has the same shotgun for $6K
