Ford just announced a Mustang Dark Horse SC. Essentially, a "pedestrian" GTD made for people who can't afford a genuine GTD. Ford still seems to be making cars for people interested in the car they bought...even if their models aren't for everyone.

Great video. The GTD is impressive but why is it so damn heavy?

Personally I’ll take the oldest car in the video please. Damn the original GT has aged well.

Right! It's CRAZY heavy. In the thread below, Jason Camissa and Randy Pobst compare the ZR1, GTD, and GT3 RS on the track. The GT3 RS is WAY down on power, but also, IIRC, over 1000# lighter than the GTD.

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/1187497-corvette-zr1-mustang-gtd-porsche-gt3-rs-camissa-pobst.html?highlight=gtd

And just to make this thread a bit easier, here's the original video embedded

Both are fun videos...but let's face it...how many here will be buying any of these?

This is an interesting article along with some video content. It's discussing the R&T "Performance Car of the Year" review/competition that R&T does, but specifically, the behind the scenes support for the vehicles. As you can imagine the Ford GTD was there, and apparently, those guys were busy.

https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a69646626/performance-car-of-the-year-2026-factory-support/

Quote:
An engineer, a systems diagnostics specialist, and a mechanic tumbled out of an F-250 Super Duty towing a trailer in support of the Ford Mustang GTD. These were all Multimatic folks, not Ford. Of everyone in attendance, these guys had to work the hardest on account of the GTD conking out on its first timed hot lap after the passenger’s-side axle separated from the transaxle, spitting transmission fluid all over the track. The Mustang was quickly towed away and arrived back on the scene as good as new just a few short hours later. Their quick work mending the car saved its bacon in the test, allowing us enough daylight to set a proper lap time.

I've gone down the rabbit hole of watching videos of 5.0 Coyote engine mods lately. I have no intention of buying a new Mustang or F150 but it seems like a pretty remarkable engine. Weak link appears to be the oil pump and timing chain drive gear on the crank. Once those are upgraded it seems like a pretty reliable engine even with turbos or a supercharger making over 800 hp and spinning over 8,000 rpm.

Also in my opinion one of the best sounding V8s out there short of an exotic.

The Ford modular designs are proving out well...the 4.6 has been as reliable as the venerable small block chevy for longevity. One guy on the Bullitt board reporting 260,000 on his '01 with routine service. Also proven out in police patrol cars and taxis..

I am almost surprised Ferd has not done this already.
I think that’s called a C8 Corvette.

I haven’t driven a C8. My son has a C6 and it does feel big, bigger than it actually is. Fun car but not for me. The new Mustangs aren’t small either though.

The C8 is a bit bigger, but not tons, than a 911 GT3, but it is quite a bit heavier. The mustang is a monster though. It makes the corvette look svelt both in exterior dimensions and weight.

Below are the dimensions of the C8, C8 ZR1, Mustang, Mustang GTD, 911 GT3, and 911 GT3RS (probably should have included the plain jane 911)

A regular C8 is ~2.5" longer, 3" wider, 3.5" shorter, and 500# heavier than the GT3. A regular Mustang is 7.5" longer, 0.5" more narrow, 6.5" taller, and 200# heavier than a C8. The Mustang GTD is 4" longer, 6" wider, and over 400# heavier than a regular mustang.

Mustang GTD is almost 14" longer, 9" wider, 5" taller, and over 1100# heavier than a 911 GT3.

Fun to watch video and interesting to see the advancements in automotive engineering and design.

I would love to drive one, or close to similar, to see what such a heavy car feels like. The Cayenne is 5500 lbs but doesn't feel like it when driving fast.

And a video with all three on a track would be a lot of fun to watch how each car takes advantage of straights and turns.

There’s a really good recent Hagerty track test video between the GTD, ZR1, and GT3.

They're all Porkers compared to an early 911....but fast porkers. Curb weight on the 1972 911S was 2440 pounds, IIRC.

Fantastic video, thanks. That was a lot of fun to watch. Maybe it's just the circles I'm in but I never would have known about the Corvette. And nearly every time I see one on the street there's an old guy in it. They are very popular in the Boston area, see them all the time on highways. Always an old guy driving slowly in middle and right lanes. Contrast to Mustangs and new Porsches are almost always driving fast, even Boxsters.

I personally think the newer 911s look huge. Even compared to a 996, and the 996 was big compared to the older air cooled models.
