Anyone have any experience in having a car damaged by hail?

Well kids, its not been the greatest of days here in Phoenix. Was looking great then a massive storm swept into town just after noon and we had golf ball sized hail for 10 minutes in my area.

House took a real hit but no idea how really bad until we can get on the roof and check the rest of it out. Most if not all screens (about $50 each) were ripped off of the windows and other misc damage. Roof tiles same thing and broken...

Then there is the pickup truck that was in the driveway. Every horizontal surface on the truck looks like someone took a ball pein hammer and started wailing at it. Every surface... roof, bed, hood and so on.

Lucky I moved the 911 in the garage 10 minutes before the storm hit.

Had the Jag outside as its starter has been acting up. Two hours before the storm hit I had it towed to a shop to have it worked on. Sad news is that when I called the mechanic after the storm he was mumbling "lots of windshields gone" and other massive damage. He would not talk with me directly about it, and am guessing that the car took a hit outside. If it looks like the truck then its totalled...

Anyone have any experience on how to go with this? I do not mind driving the truck looking as is, its a forking truck. The Jag very well may not make it and that is a lot of $$$. Its a "one of only 100 ever built" so is pretty rare. How to get it valued is a good question but it was in pristine "like new" condition so not going to quibble on price.

Regarding the truck feel that I should get some estimates on fixing it then see what they say. This is with Farmers. Have tried to call the claim center and after an hours wait had to run. Am guessing that they are very busy. Have already talked with my agent and sent them an email telling them that I am going to be filing a claim on the house and vehicles.

Does the repair shop's insurance cover the Jag or will it go under mine? I have high ($1000) deductables on everything so that hurts but full coverage on both vehicles.

Thx,

Joe A

Wife's Infiniti FX35 had about 30+ dents after a hail storm. Dent Wizard type place took care of it. Cost about $2k, but only cost us the $500 deductible. They took care of all the dents, even those that weren't from hail damage.

This is what you have insurance for. Random, unpredictable events.

If Farmer's is worth its salt, it's moving teams of claims adjusters to Phoenix to deal with this. Do you have comprehensive on the affected vehicles? If not, then it's not covered. If you do, it's perfectly legal to pocket the check for the truck. The point of insurance is to cover you for your loss, whether you choose to fix it is up to you.

As for your house, if you have insurance on it, it's covered.

Rob,

It was a bear, and we had 10 full minutes of golfball sized hail, worst I have seen in this area ever. Get your goodies inside...

Thanks guys and hopefully the Jag is fixable but will find out tomorrow. The truck is liveable but still hurts.

Have never dealt with insurance companies with something like this so needed some advise.

Chris,

Yes have comprehensive on both, so lets see.

Do not mind "pocketing the check" on the truck but wan the Jag fixed. Its a pretty rare car, not like a daily driver like the truck.

Joe

Every year Kansas City seems to take a beating with hail. Insurance companies are used to paying off on it. The painless dent repair guys make a fortune and the car dealers have a hail damage sale.

They sure will here in the next weeks... it hit us hard, both bodywork and glasswork, then there are the houses that got hit. Took most of the screens off of the windows and trashed them.

Save the money and wait a few months for the swarm to slow down. Find a PDR guy that is slow and you will get a better deal than you would right now. A good PDR guy can make a car look like new again. This can cost in the thousands tho. If you were in OK I'd refer you to a guy....

You never got hail when you lived in OK? Thats shocking...

Got it all the time in the mid-west. I live in Arizona last time I looked.

Thanks for the ideas on the PDR guys, will see what the insurance company says then go from there.

we had a nasty storm roll through a few years back. i was running a european body shop at the time, and a dealer came to us to have his new car stock "Fixed".....we subletted it to our PDR guy. they really are the "violinists" of the body repair industry. a good PDR guy will make into the 6 figures, and their service is worth it.

usually they will cut a deal to do a whole car, versus just a few dings....especially if it's slow, like sid mentioned

Yes - the day we moved into Texas we were met with a hail storm that not only beat the shyt out of a Volvo I owned but also ruined my roof! After a hail storm the roofing companies and body work guys set up temp buildings and feed on the survivors like a bunch of sharks at a mackerel convention.

"Anyone have any experience in having a car damaged by hail?"

Yes, my 356 coupe was caught in a hail storm. Insurance adjuster couldn't find any dents on the left rear fender so they would only pay for 75% of a paint job. I wrote hate mail to them for a month. I pointed out the absurdity of painting all but 2 square feet of rear fender, the issues with paint matching etc. They sent another blind adjuster out. After another month of hate mail they finally sent an adjuster who had been a painter. He understood, "found" a dent, and wrote up a whole paint job.

Hey Joe,

I had a '95 Mustang GT that got hammered by hail while I watched out my window at work. Every horizontal surface except the hood (it was composite) had damage, including the black anodized and rubber weatherstripping.

I had Allstate at the time, and they had a mobile station set up that you took your car too. They prices out everything, including paint, and I had a check for just under $7K in a couple of weeks.

I ended up using the money as part of the down payment on my house, and never fixed the car.

Good luck on the Jag.

Bill

We just got whacked in Northern NV.....fortuantely the rides were all under cover. Small house but we have 4 covered spaces. The 911 had the front end off due to a pesky oil leak, the Pomtiac Solstice is in for the winter, and the two trucks were not used today......

As to who is liable, I would suggest that you make pains to prove that the Jag was a garage queen, as to proving value? Hmmmm, did you ever get a survey/appraisal? Do you have any type of declared value? Any idea when one of this model sold last?

Good luck...lemme know if I can help.

The wife was in Dallas at this diabetes education thing in her brand new truck. Sirens go off, tornado warning blinking on the TV. Sky turns black, she can see it coming, and does not have covered parking. She backed up on the sidewalk in front of her room at the hotel, took the comforter off the bed and stuck it over the front. Saved her from multiple pea sized dents suffered by the cars that were parked on either side of where she had been.

My friend John was not so lucky. All the glass, headlights, tail lights, dent that was a perfect holder for a baseball, numerous defects looking like they were made by a ball peen hammer. Can't remember how much it was, but it was not cheap.
