The dog is part of the system. I live in a 2 story house and my gun safe is in my bedroom. The dog sleeps at the top of the stairs. Anyone coming in the house gets barked at. The level & tone of the barks depends on if I'm home or not.

Say I'm sleeping and someone breaks in. Big dog with big barks going ape $hit is enough to deter most thiefs. If they are really determined to come upstairs the sight of me naked at the top of the stairs next to the fur with teeth will scare off the next bunch of low lifes. If that dosen't work about 5-6 seconds to unlock and load. The sound of a pump action shotgun being cycled is enough to bring the hair standing up on the back of anyones neck. If that dosen't work "I was in fear for my life" will be the last thing they hear.

As to kids, ODJOB & Byron understand. You teach the kids respect at a early age. You show them what will happen. You teach them that guns are not toys to be played with or to impress their friends. You teach them that death is final. There is no redo's in real life.

Being a single parent, my son had access to my guns lots of times when I wasn't home. I never heard once that he had opened the gun safe to impress his friends...and kids can't keep a secret. I told him if his friends wanted to see them I would be the one to show them, not him and I did that a few times.

He took his hunter safety at 12 and shot his first deer about a month later. I don't hunt with people I don't feel safe with. Were going for White tail next week.
