We had 2 cats in upstate NY that had extra toes.

1st one, they were extra mini feet, 2+toes and a foot pad. It made the feet huge. He could oppose them and grip things.

2nd one had thumbs. It was a single extra toe, but offset like a thumb. This cat really didn't like other cats too much. One day, a kitten showed up on our porch which was maybe 6 months old, but virtually identical to our cat, including the thumbs. I'm thinking this was some offspring...never saw it again.

The info was that the cats were from a royal line of Dutch cats. The Dutch settled most of upstate NY, before the Brits took over.

Cats with extra toes make me smile.
It looks like they walk around wearing little catcher's mitts. :)

Likely. Polydactyls are a genetic mutation that can only be passed directly from another Polydactyl. It's not recessive.

Peaches's thumbs are opposable. Kinda freaky when they "grab" you. Also makes her walk funny, she looks almost like a bulldog from the front.

Trekkor, glad to hear that she checked out okay, she's a real cutie. And may I add...Suckerrrr!!! I'm firmly convinced that we don't pick them, but they pick us, and they know a soft touch when they see one. Good luck with her.

Speaking of Hemingway cats (not to hijack the thread), here are a couple of pics I took when we visited his house. The first features a fountain, the base of which is a urinal, from a bar he frequented that was torn down. Not sure if the cats in the pics are polydactyl.

We keep our black cat in at Halloween. I guess my wife read about people abusing black cats at that time of year. Probably urban myth.

Oh, has this turned into a show your cat thread? If so . . .

Zany. The oddest cat I have ever owned. A shy schizophrenic (long story) refugee from my in-laws as they left their house. We reluctantly added her to our household – shared with the diminutive Uma – her ‘cousin’. Uma mercilessly dominated Zany for a year and a half until she died several years back. Zany spent that time cowering under the dining room table – literally. But watching . . .

At 12 years old, she has transformed into a talkative, couch cat who won’t leave me alone in my office – especially when I return from travel. She emulates a lot of Uma's behavior. Super friendly with everybody. Spontaneously sleeps under sheets & covers – we just see a lump. A bald spot on her side & a near hairless tail & somewhat arthritic - she ain’t pretty . . . but the way she has ‘come out’ is amazing. A great cat.

She also didn't like me taking her picture. :D

First one was a rescue cat.

Second one jumped the fence one day and adopted us.

I cannot sit or get on the couch without her coming and sleeping on me. Been two years now since she adopted me.

Little "Gray"...never past 9 pounds. Came to us as a stray, no idea of age. She left us a year or so before we adopted the current two. He sole goal in life was to be on Cindy's lap. Yes, she's missed...as they all are. This was taken when we knew she was sick.

I see the introduction has gone well.

pwd72s 11-19-2010 11:23 AM

I'm amazed the other two were so accepting so soon...

trekkor 11-19-2010 11:25 AM

There was little bit of cat slapdown, hissy fit, and 'fat tail'.

Wow, that was quick. They certainly make a good looking trio.

trekkor 11-19-2010 11:27 AM

I took that picture an hour ago.
The three of them are still there.
