Perhaps we should have some of the active and retired officers chime in?

They have on the other thread, the CO screwed up was the call, he is the leader, he was dumb enough to broadcast..

M.D. Holloway 01-04-2011 12:22 PM

Therefor I stand down and corrected. My mind has been changed and going forward I concur with military leadership and think this was a dismal display of leadership and poor judgment on his part.

I was wrong.

(but I still think it was pantie-waist chickenshyt to complain...)

Mike, it is not so much that he did something stupid. It is that he did something stupid, recorded it, and broadcast it to 5000 guys.

Boneheaded moves in public is not what you want from flag officers. They are held to a different standard than normal folks and politicians.

Standard? What's that about?

Taken out of context, distributed to the media and broadcast around the world,he comes off like an irresponsible D##k.
Which he is not.

Here is the problem with that sentiment: Honors was the Executive Officer (XO) of the ship: "The XO is the direct representative of the commanding officer in maintaining the general efficiency of the ship. With the assistance of the heads of departments, the XO arranges and coordinates all ship’s work, drills, exercises, personnel organization, and the policing and inspection of the ship. The XO investigates matters affecting the discipline and conduct of the crew and makes recommendations concerning these matters to the commanding officer. The XO usually approves or disapproves liberty lists and leave requests."

The highlighted part is key: The XO either metes out punishment (including forfeiture of rank and pay, loss of leave, restriction to the ship, discharge from the navy, etc.) or recommends punishment to the CO. I have never seen an XO's recommendation overturned unless discussed in advance...think "good cop/bad cop".

The XO has to be above reproach in these matters. Careers of men and women are literally in the hands of an XO.

I never said Honors is a bad man, I said he was stupid, that his judgment is in question. Look, he has been around long enough to understand that, since Tailhook, do the frat party behind closed doors with the camera in the off position.

Thanks for your opinion, but do you have any evidence that the Obama administration had anything to do with it at all? The story broke after someone on the ship told a Virginia newspaper about it. All the reports I've read are about what the Navy is doing about it.
The guy who produced the videos was the second in command of a half-billion dollar ship and he was acting like a frat boy. The only responsible thing to do is replace him with someone who is serious about his job and his career.

Bold added. Well-stated.

Wow. He clearly states if you are easily offended you should not watch the video. He also states that professional comics used the F bomb with great success on board, so he would try it too.

IMO he was trying to boost moral. ANYBODY with a sense of humor would not be offended. I lived on a ship for 3 years with too much Persian Gulf sea time. It would have been nice to have something like this to watch and discuss later.

He could (should?) have had an enlisted person do it with the same disclaimer, but IMO it is better for somebody of his position to try to lighten up a horrible situation.

I guess the world is such a place now that you have to worry about offending somebody with just about every comment or action.

It is about the only kind of transmission that a sports car would have.

bk911 - he can lighten up and so forth the way Omar Bradley did - no problem

he cannot act contrary to US military laws or policy.

it is worse b/c he was XO on a carrier - the biggest target* our Navy has, and a famed name, at that.

* ooops!

see how I lightened up this post - now, if he was certified as a crazy person ("boat people") they would still come down on him - but he isn't he commands (one of) our finest, biggest surface warships

wow, I just caught the evening news no ax grinding going on there. good job on the public castration of another great American mrs couric and co. for the record I thought the tape was funny and would have more sespect for Mr Honors than any uptight lifer! by the way I was a machinist mate second class, a-gang, hydraulics shop, USS John F Kennedy CV-67 I was there for 2.5 years, 6 months as part of the brig staff and one med cruise FTN haha!

Unfortunately, so many here are CVT's.

Tobra 01-05-2011 01:44 PM

Then they are not sports cars, just tarted up automatics.

Yes, yes they. Also dogmatics that change with wind.

Sailors (and everyone else in the military) are supposed to be professional, not raunchy... In my 9 years as a USN Hospital Corpsman, I saw many true professionals and they greatly outnumbered the scumbags.
