Holmes on Homes, what's everyone think?

So, what do you guys think of the show/guy.

I like what he does on many levels. I find the show educational. I enjoy watching it occasionally, but if I see too many of them, I start to get tired of hearing the same stuff out of him about how awesome he is.

Still, I'd love to be able to hire someone that I thought was going to do as good a job as he does. I figure those guys are <1% at best.

But, he does do not only good work from a technical standpoint, but the work of saving people from bad contractors and poorly done work is a great thing. I've heard or read that he's actually footed part of the bill out of his own pocket a time or two for some of the work.

Its a good show. I would like a segment where he gets the previous contractor to come and explain some of the decision making that results in such a disaster.

It is a good show. My understanding is he owns the show, and it pays for a majority of each fix.

"Glue it and screw it!" Words to live by! I really like bivenator's idea about getting the privious contractor on to do some explaining but somehow I don't think it would be all that easy to get them on the show!

I find the show informative. I tuck info in the back of my mind for future projects. Last week they had a show that told his story. He has 3 or 4 kids that all work for him. The most interesting story was one where the whole house would have to come down. The producers told him they didn't have time to do a whole house. He quit. They agreed to do it. Often those subs he hires like the plumbers, electricians, etc volunteer their time to improve those homes. Impressive.

Are you kidding? I do my own work. I am in the process of ripping bead board panelling off in the bathroom and hanging sheetrock. Next month I will be pulling out the fiberglass shower unit and tiling.

Arrow Save a lot of money this way and it's done right.

Stephanie

Good for you. I use to do all my stuff but since I got Das Babe... I don't have time so I hire my brother-in-law

Well, when you get some down time... you need to beef-up (for us) DR JEKIL and MR HIDE garage. It needs a lot more photos and details for our viewable pleasure

Neat show, but very repetitive. I watched if for a while but every show is basically the same. Some interesting info though. I'm not sure what it's called but the stuff they put under tile seems like good stuff.

It could just as well be called Holmes on Holmes, - they guy couldn't be more full of himself if he hacked off his arm and ate it.

Having said that, the show can be pretty entertaining. Unbelievable what people will pay to have done. Most of the electrical seems to be one electron from disaster.

This reminds me, I got a message from a contractor I used a couple years ago. He said he's doing some work in my neighborhood and used me as a reference. They did OK work, but not good enough for me to recommend them. It's kind of weird, the contractor and his sons call me ever so often like they're my friends. I've done my best to ignore them, but they're not taking the hint. I guess a guy with a 930 and other toys in the garage is just too interesting to them to get the hint.

On the other hand, I have a good friend who's a good contractor and he rarely does work for me. I guess he's smart enough to know not to work for an engineer

... to figure out what you were talking about. Yes, I almost when that way. Dense Styrofoam base and tile over.

I end up with a finish unit instead. Was a full gutted reno.

Tomorrow, I'm going to N.Y. to pick-up some flexible molding (as well as a P.P. order) that will cover the gap at the top. Then, I'll finish the side and the towel heaters are on their way. Another month and it's all finish.

Mind you the boss is not too happy since I bought the stuff in May 2009.

In June 09 I fell in love with Das babe and I had the best summer/fall of my life.

Winter came and with Das Babe being in storage, I sunk in a rather deep depression that lasted too long for my taste.

A friend that I met through this site, kick started the reno in late Feb and it's almost finish. In all I cost is lest than 50% of the lowest quote that I had receive.

Anyway Das Babe will never leave home again.

Got a scissor lift (check post 5 of http://forums.pelicanparts.com/canada/542853-hemi-roadrunner-scissor-lift.html ) and I'm converting the garage to a heated one.

Winter project includes full brake job (cross drilled) and SSIs matted to B&K 2 In 2 Out with the optional internal plug...

Enough about me, here is a couple of shots;

Home Depot Special...

Maxx Shower...

I was watching the show and the electrician walked in wearing a Back Porsche jacket. At least he has that going for him.

... any contractor coming in to give you a quote while driving a BMW, Audi or Mercedes Benz.

Guess who is paying for the car.

Sure enough my buddy called forquote to redo a stair case in oak. Without looking at it, it was always around $5K.

I checked around and the supplies was barely 1K. So another 1K for the labors (which is about $40 an hour) leaving about 3K for the car

Glad to see somebody else that knows what that stuff is...

My bathroom project is on hold because I'm waiting for my Kerdi order from tile-experts to come in. Hope it comes in the mail soon... it's getting close to a week now.

I like the show BTW - especially after visiting my parents while they'd watch Flip this House or some other show where they'd just cover up problems like wood rot and focus only on the make it pretty type stuff.

I've always had contractors show up in a $60,000 pickup that's never had a stick of lumber in it.....
