Between 1973 and 1993 you could have done a whole 20 year career in special ops and never had a mission.

I was one of those guys.

Special Forces is the "Green Berets."

Rangers are light infantry commandos. They are under the SOCOM umbrella, so can be rightly called SPECOPS troops i would think.

Uh, yea. Rangers train Seals.

First, thank you for your service Don.
Second, thank you for your excellent response to that poster.

It floored me because it vividly brought back memories of the one SEAL friend I had many years ago. I can hear him responding in those same words, with the same calm and understated confidence.

You guys really are all cut from the same special cloth.

Stay safe SEAL.

Excuse?

The 75th Ranger Rgt falls under the SOCOM command structure, they are this nation's most elite, highly trained light infantry force. Rangers being SPECOPS forces has zero to do with the Navy SEALs, or who trains SEALs, something i never even adressed (SEALs are trained by the USN at BUDS).

So again....huh?

ODDJOB UNO 05-05-2011 09:11 PM

i have been doing some upgrading for my halloween costume(deer season oct 31st here) and have been looking at various gear. reading about the changeovers from ALICE to MOLLE and ILBE(individual load bearing equip).

right now on a full combat loadout many gi's of whatever service are carrying up to 120 freeking pounds.

and if yer a SAW gunner............well ya better be "lil john" standing 6'8" weighing 275#.

entire military since iraq and afghan is on a "lighten the load" craze and rightfully so.

bottom line you have a insurgent with a towel and an AK or a RPG vs a weighted down usgi with 120# on his back running like a freeking duck!

lean and mean is on the menu and with this there should be some real trickle down to all of us who go out in the middle of BFE on combat wombat deer/elk super secret squirrel hunting missions.

so far of all the backpacks i have looked at............the USMC ILBE RECON pack is the nicest. and of course a hefty pricetag to boot for it. made by arcteryx.

Special Forces = "Green Beret" Specops
Ranger = Specops
SFOD-D (Delta) = Specops
Civil Affairs and PSYOP = Specops
S.E.A.L. = Specops
Combat Controller = Specops
MARSOC = Specops
There are others.....

What exactly defines "Special Forces?" Is it graduating from one of the schools, or being part of a subsequent select group or...?<br>

My dad graduated from Airborne and Ranger school, but I don't know if that puts him in the "special forces" camp or not... I've definitely never heard him use that term.

Hard-Deck 05-06-2011 06:02 AM

I also tell every one of my newly minted Specop Soldiers that "Special" means unique NOT superior to any other service member and I keep them professional, humble and quiet. They are lethal killers though.

widgeon13 05-06-2011 06:08 AM

BUDS just qualifies one to be a SEAL, the actual training follows that.

DD is on a roll and when that happens facts rarely get in the way. Listen to "snapper" and you will hear the truth.

Nah. He's not on a roll; you're just on the skids.

Listen to "snapper" and you will hear the truth.

Well duhhh. Thank you for enlightening us.

Yeah, snapper's the real deal, not just a would be sniper.

..

M.D. Holloway 05-06-2011 09:00 AM

In my book, firing a load at a rail welding choco-bunny qualifies one for specops in the civil sense!

Snipes may be many things but his antics and sexual misgivings are the stuff of folly and mirth. I for one enjoy those 'tails'.
