Put it on fleabay with a reserve 4x's what you paid for it.

If that's all you get then you can give a 1/4 to your bud to assuage your guilt and you are still taking money off the table.

If it were me and I ended up getting stupid ridiculous money for it I'd give my buddy half minus what I paid him for it.

But that's me. YMMV.

Let us be clear...U would be a GDmed FOOL to put that car up for sale without doing your homework as to its HISTORY..That history will net U an extra 10K +, especially if it is a noteworthy history. So it is worth your time and effort.

U are right to flip it, if you don't have the stroke to do it right. The guy who does do it right is REALLY CUTTING HIS PROFIT MARGIN in the car as he is going to close the gap between what it is worth and what he has in it. When finding a car like that it is BEST to flip it and make the DINERO (unless you have VERY VERY deep pockets). Then you can go on to something else. I guarntee there is ALWAYS something else just around the corner.

A Pre A might be something special, but there are other Speedsters out there and that puts a ceiling on their value.

BTW Do not do anything to that car except for cleaning it up. Guys who want that car want it just the way you found it.

I'm surprised Grady Clay hasn't chimed in. A lot of sound advice here, but I would value his input if I were trying to make this kind of decision.

I did talk to John Wilhoit, he said he can probably find a buyer for me. I would have loved to take this project on but my finances aren't there the amount I would have to spend is way more than I will ever have. I hate to get rid of it but I will never be able to do it justice.

Here is what you should do: Take good pictures and put it on eBay with a ridiculous reserve, more than you think you can possibly get for it. Maybe $75k or more. Do not disclose the reserve to anyone, including on this thread or another here. You will get countless emails from bidders asking what your reserve is. Respond to (1) of them and post the question and answer on the listing: "I will not disclose the reserve out of fairness to all bidders. Bid what you are willing to pay". If it was me, I'd make the reserve $1M to fk with guy who will bid $80k just to find out the reserve and then cancel his bid. But that's just me.

The car will get worldwide exposure to everyone, and I mean everyone who is even remotely a buyer for it. It will get coverage on various BBSs where people track 356s and vintage cars in general. The threads will all be titled, "Pre-A cab on eBay". For $100, (or whatever an eBay car listing costs these days), you will get about a million dollars worth of advertising and get countless offers from legit buyers. You will in effect have *an auction within an auction*, that is to say that you do not really want to sell it on eBay. An eBay "winner" has at least a 50/50 chance of flaking or not performing, then you have to re-list it and now everyone thinks that it's tainted merchandise and the (real) bids get lower.

The way that you want to sell it is face-to-face for cash to a legit buyer who has either inspected it in person or had their agent inspect it in person. EBay is by far and away the best forum for advertising a car such as this but not the best place to sell it always, IMO. Believe me, I've thought these situations through thoroughly. Good luck!

Scott, 4x what he paid could be 1% of what it's worth, if I understand his purchase correctly. That's bad advice. If he decides to kick-down $$ to his friend, they'll both get a hell of a lot more with my plan.

I don't think Grady ventures to OT much. I think Speeder is on the right track. Find out as much history as you can and add that to the ebay auction. It will only boost your chances of getting a better price.

I agree with speeder's plan. I would not rush to sell a car that has this kind of value. Do the research and follow a well-thought out plan. You don't want to make the sale and then realize you could have made a substantial bit more. It may seem counter intuitive that an incomplete vehicle that needs considerable work is more complicated to price than a complete, restored vehicle, but it is the provenance and value post-restoration that makes this sort of sale such a conundrum. Best of luck and I would heed the advice of the guys on this site.

Was really just trying to make the point that a Mensche would share the bounty with the "close friend".

Wow, cool story. I had all but forgotten about this site until catching up on the 356 Registry. Don't recall seeing it over there, however, have barely been on there either the past year. I too am curious to read any upates....

This might help. I had 80244, very close to your car. Sold it for $62,000, went back to the Fatherland.

How much $ and how long have you put in it, if you don't mind?

I sold the car to John Wilhoit I didn't get $62,000 but I got enough. It was wrecked before and needed just about every panel replaced.
