can a regular person buy IV bags?
by regular, i mean non-medical person..
i almost messed up a perfectly good 4-day weekend. on friday, i got up (not so early), gulped coffee, hopped on my bike and rode around. then visited friends on a trackday. did a session in a very hot, and fast vette. i thought it was motion sickness. i was hot and queasy, and my head hurt. i went home. it was 100 degrees at my home. i went to my MIL, she had the AC cranked. i laided down and started to sip water. i noted that i had not peed all day. oh-o! it took a day and a half to feel better! i think i drank several gallons of water, and blended watermelon juice. i kept thinking, an IV bag would speed things along. i rode yesterday right before the sun went down. cooler temps, and i kept sucking on my camelback full of iced water. it was nice by comparison. lesson learned. not so sure how i would administer IV on myself. i guess beg one of my nursing friends.

Doesn't sound like you were dehydrated enough to need an IV. One tip from an MD when Cindy became dehydrated from flu vomiting. Gatorade to replace the electrolytes...if you can keep it down for any length of time, better than H20...

It's happened to me as well and it's gets more challenging as you get older. I've gotten dehydrated on ems calls, cycling, skiing, air travel. I try to hydrate before heavy activity. It really sneaks up on you and if you are at altitude, just makes it worse.

Amen on the older...a few hour of lawn mowing in 80 plus degree heat (I use a walk behind mower) and the gatorade becomes refreshing. Dunno why, but the stuff works.

are YOU for REAL? 1st we go from your freaked out dawg, to now IV bags. wow man i sure as hell am glad i dont live yer life with this many questions.
but anyway to answer this one: 1) 100 degrees ambient temp aint POO! thats a freeking a COLD FRONT TO US! try 118 degrres ambient F! better yet 122-124F! then throw in 60 humidity or higher! 2) yer 1st stunt was drinking COFFEE a known and documented DIE-UR-ETIC! that means it causes yer body to EXPEL WATER(H2O) and thats just STOOPID! and yer gonna DIE.............after you expel all moisture from yer body! 3) a nimrod who was "allegedly" in excellent shape and a seasoned hiker just died hiking last week and it was ONLY 116 degrees F! hmmmmmmm??? WTF? any seasoned dezert rat will tell you ............."HYDRATE OR DIE! (camelpak also) and that means damn near 3 gallons of WATER(H2O) a day. dont believe me? then take a good look at what GI's are drinking and how much a day in bagdad, iraq, where its 122F for quite some time during the year. now add in any humidity, which will fool your body into thinking its cool, and the next damn thing ya know ya have heat prostration. and at that point are YOU going to have the brain intellect to apply a needle to your vein and administer an IV TO YERSELF?..........................i highly doubt it! so knock the coffee/tea crap off, drink water or gatorade mixed 50/50 or be LIKE ME and say after 53 years of living in this god fer saken freeking hell hole, the HELL with working /playing outside unless a swimming pool/lake/river and BEER(lots of) IS INVOLVED! and this comes from someone that has ridden dirty bikes in the dez and off road raced in baja in june when 122-124F is not uncommon below sea level. (laguna salada). sweat? you gotta be feeking NUTZ! sweat is for MORONS! i aint sweating unless I AM PAID MUCHO PESOS TO SWEAT!

Gatoraid or Pedialite.
Gatoraid has more salt and carbs than Pedialite so it's really good for rehydrating during/after physical activity. Pedialite while targeted to kids is fine for adults as well. Formulated for dehydration due to vomiting/intestinal issues. Liquid Gatoraid uses fructose, the powdered form has real sugar.

I suffer from a tremendous amount of food allergies and I'm sick a lot from even the smallest amount of food bacteria, this of course requires re-hydration quite often. I come from a family of doctors, and most recently my new sister in law finished residency, she gives me the IV's at home now. (previously my mother did)
At any rate you can get IV saline here in Colorado from some of the bigger pharmacies, but you need a doctor or an IV certified technician (not sure if that's the right title) to purchase it. They also do not sell the needle/shunt/catheter thing here without a doctor as well, not sure if that's a local law or not. You can also buy it online as well, with the needle if you like from a lot of places. I've seen people pack them in survival kits when hiking. But I could never give myself the needle. feh - proper IV bags are for wimps. Just tape a 14 gauge needle to a camelback. Your kidneys will thank you.

Seriously, no IV bag. Learn to hydrate with the right stuff.
Twice I have watched the winners on the "Western States 100 Mile Race" come across the finish line and get IV'd pronto. You are not that bad. When I worked briefly for a D.M.E. (durable medical equipment) co., sometimes pilots would come in and ask for catheters (sp?). They used them for long flights with no bathroom. |

I drink 1 liter of Powerade Zero a day. You don't want to be using an IV, you're not that dehydrated, you just need to drink lots of clear fluids and listen to what your body is telling you...

Even if you could get a source for the IV bags, drip valve, and IV catheters, it's a REALLY bad idea to introduce something into your own bloodstream in that manner. The resultant hemodilution could be fatal for a variety of reasons, not to mention that air emboli and other truly nasty things could occur. A trained professional and the right IV solutions for the situation is what would be needed.
Drink fluids. Learn what the solider do in the desert and follow those instructions. I particularly like the sergeant being quoted saying "...if you don't have to take a leak, you aren't drinking enough..." Maybe not literally true, but it makes the point. |

Koolade mix packet 3/4 cups dextrose 1/4 cup sucrose 1 tsp "Lite Salt" 64 oz water This will fill 3 bicycle water bottles. It is not as sweet as most gatorade type drinks, it has the calories and the electrolytes you need. On extended rides, I carry powder premixed and split per bottle. Depending on the outside temp, I drink between 1 bottle every 10-20 miles. 90-100F = 1 bottle/10 miles. Below 70F is usually 1 bottle every 20. YMMV. I also make my own gel type "Guu" products. You need calories once you get beyond about 2 hours of exercise.

ya wanna know dehydrated????????? ask any u.s. border patrol officer what they usually find with a stiff(body) out in the san diego sector/yuma sector/tucson sectors.
scattered all over the dez are 1 gallon milk jugs, by the millions. standard drill is a backpack full of dope(name the flavor) and (2) milk jugs filled with water. some make it.................a hell of alot dont! one of our off road racing secrets was/is..................completely soak your clothes with ice cold water. wear long sleeves and obviously pants, of a lightweight neutral light colored fabric. as you ride dirty bikes or in a buggy or a truck, the hot air in no time will dry you completely. next pit stop...........repeat again. immerse entire intrepid driver and co-dawg with water, and fill camelpak with 50/50 water and gatorade. rivers....................a gift from gawd! dying aint NO WAY OF LIVING! right now in all of my 4x4's are at least 1 gallon of water. just sitting in event of an emergency in some poo hole of the dez. we used to jump in my pool at home with all our dez mx gear on including boots. 22 miles east is the verde river. by the time we got their averaging 60mph we were completely DRY and SPENT from the heat of the summer and just plunge in the water to cool ourselves off. bean der dunned dat!
