Mustangs that got away
My first car was a 64 1/2 Mustang with a 260V8. Bought it at 15 after washing dishes all summer long and into 11 grade. Total barn find, owner said the motor only needed to be put back together. It had diamond plate floors. and a perfect front grill. white over red, 3 on the floor. I devoured Mustang magazines and lusted after fastbacks.
Motor turned out to be junk, really junk and I finally ended up selling it and going into 240Z's. Of course that car is worth a fair bit today. Wish we had just gotten a random 289 or 260 out of a Falcon and gotten it going. 20/20 and all that. Any other Mustangs get away?

This is one that I've been trying for 8 years to keep from getting away. Still sitting behind a factory in Elk Grove IL. in the same spot it was when I first laid eyes on it. Made multiple cash offers, dude just doesn't want to sell it. First pic is from '04. the others a little more recent.

I had a 69 fastback I bought from the original owner around 1989. Rebuilt everything and painted it. Sold it for less than I had in it because I was building a house. Wish I still had that one.

A high school buddy, during high school, had a 69' Mach1. Green with the flat black stripes, shaker hood, Windsor 351. Everybody used to talk about the Cleveland 351 being superior, urban legend is what I say. The thing ripped. Had sex in the car, was handcuffed & arrested in the car, kicked arse & took names drag racing it, (RipRap Road in the Dayton Ohio area).
One of the few things in my youth I look back fondly of.

My friend and I restored a 1968 Shelby GT500KR with 428 CobraJet, roll bar, convertible and auto with A/C, then sold it for $16k back in the early 80's....

I bought this 1997 GT new as a daily driver. Not long after, it was auto-crossed as stock and then, after considerable suspension upgrading, as a fairly serious SCCA E Street Prepared car. Still a pig, but a pretty damn quick pig.
![]() Retired it when the new generation Mustangs outclassed it. Last year it was returned to (nearly) stock and given to my 16 year old daughter. Within two weeks she turned left in front of a car she says ran a light. Result - daughter fine, Mustang totaled (it had never been hit, not even scratched before this). The Mustang was reliable, with lovely V-8 torque and, once modified, handled amazingly well (315 Kumho 710s all around will do that). The leather interior was crap - both front seats were replaced under warranty. Just imagine how bad they had to be to get Ford to replace them for free. The factory tolerances on the unibody were a joke. Replacing suspension components required a lot of heat and a BFH. The car was unsquare from the factory the rear wheels didn't track true to the fronts. Fender clearance differed by more than 1/2" side to side. That said, it was an honest car that never claimed to be a BMW or a Porsche and it surely was not. The leather in my 27 year old Porsche is in far better condition than the Mustang leather was when new. My 10 year old 325ci is a far better DD, though I confess to missing that V-8. Do I miss it? Yes. Would I buy a 2012 302? Tempting, very tempting. But, the Porsche is forever. 'Nuff said.
