...snip...

One mans porn is another mans art.
The art is in the craftsmanship and although aesthetics rarely adds performance, it is the first indication of "pride in workmanship". Quality in aesthetics shows the application of professional judgment, quality control, and responsibility to provide the best possible performance / outcome.
If it looks sloppy it generally shows a lack of mechanical understanding or even a general laziness.

This.

If only more adults understood it and instilled this value in children, the world would be a better place.

OMGGGGGGGGGG - Byron - what is this??? Please share. Do all slide valves look like that - this one looks unique to me. And an oil filter in lieu of an oil cooler???

Those aren't slide valve but they are very cool looking stacks for standard Bosch MFI throttle bodies.

I agreed with you completely, right up until the last sentence. That's something you tell your customers, not someone who knows better.

Making it look good has nothing to do with making it run good.
I've seen lots of pretty machines broke down on the side of the road.
I've seen lots of machines that had no time or money squandered to make them "look good", but they ran great.

I've spent my life rebuilding million dollar machines, or supervising others doing the same.
Here's the deal: most customers have no idea what good mechanics are all about, so you shine it up and they think it's good out of ignorance. It's called a one gallon overhaul.

We've done incredible work on a machine, and the customer isn't that impressed. We can do the same work but spiff it all up, and they say WOW, good job.

I have no interest in arguing the merits of clean, orderly assembly other than to ask this question: What is the rationale behind a sloppy looking project.
As for "squandering money" if you can't afford to clean a project, perhaps that project should sit until you have time to clean it.

Sammy - I agree with you on so many things, but I'd let this one go.

Isn't there some expression among engineers about good designs being easy on the eye?

GH85Carrera 09-09-2011 02:25 PM

Henry, I agree with your clean orderly approach, especially for a 911 engine. Remember Sammy will argue with anyone about anything.

A mega million dollar generator that almost no one sees does not need to be pretty. A fresh rebuilt 911 engine should.

daepp 09-09-2011 02:29 PM

And I suppose, by extension, beautiful rebuilds...

But then again I am a bit biased :)
