Jacks surfboards in Dana point rents wetsuits and surfboards. I bet a quick call to them can get you all set for some beach days.

FYI very flat right now

Went to San O today. Pretty cool. I like Waikiki but this place would be the second... Will post a pic later. Still suck at paddling. Think it might be time for me to buy a board.

Weird foggy day but good waves... but remember, you are asking a newbie. But other surfers were saying it was a great day with plenty of waves.

I approve of this message.

I got out Wed and Thu for evening sessions. Small swell but weather was perfect. As in perfect. Thursday we (took my son and two of his friends) made it to Venice by 5pm, and watched the sun drop into the ocean from the water. Was going to hit it Friday but the weather fell apart. Swell didn't hit until late Fri and it isn't huge but looks like today isn't a bad day to be out. Fog has cleared at least here in SM.

T - great photos....looks like you had FUN!!!

As far as purchasing your first stick.....rule of thumb for a beginner is to get something that floats you well so you can paddle and catch waves easier then progress over time to smaller sizes to add performance factor if that is your goal. Some surfers have a more cruiser type style especially on long boards but smaller boards allow for more tight maneuvering like snap backs and such.

I think it would help if you tried out several different sizes to see what you feel comfortable on. The one in your pics seems to suit you OK. Only you know if it does or not as everyone has a different feel for what works.

Also - what worked the best for me over the years is when you find a shaper who shapes the type of board that suits your surfing - that's like finding the holy grail. Living in Arizona is not going to help your progression but who knows over time you may wind up moving closer and surfing more. The more you surf the faster you progress and the more you know what board works better for you and the more you swap them out to get better ones. Almost like these Porsches..ha ha.

Well those are my thoughts but I'm sure there are many other Pelicans who can offer their opinions as well.

Cowabunga girl!!!

in 35+ years of body boarding, the best waves I rode were at Ocean Beach up in San Francisco. Oct of '94 there were 3 days of solid 4-7' surf with sun and offshore winds. I got multiple sick hair-dry barrels.

Cold freakin' water and nasty side currents. You paid for those waves. I've surfed bigger but those days were magic.

Todd, many years ago there had been some big floods up SF way and a lot of mud and silt got washed down the rivers and built up some of the most amazing sandbars at Santa Cruz. It was really big but the quality made it very rideable. There was a great left and right just south of the amusement park

couple weeks ago i was in jersey didnt think id go surfing as it was cold rainy and just miserable. I decided to go take a look and when i saw it was 5-6' offshore wind and just plain amazing i changed into my wetsuit and had to paddle out. Every wave I caught that day was magic! clean faces, only a few people out, lines as far as you could see.
