Lots of flaws in this story...
What's a slide rule? Where was the little toolkit that comes with the bike? Protagonist doesn't know how to change a plug, but he's an engineer? (OK, that could be true, ha ha)

i doubt they would saw through the plug.... just snap it off. however, i don't remember them being hollow.
