It's more likely the gauge. ...well, that little black voltage conditioning box that sits near the gauge. I don't remember tthe specifics, other than having to de-solder / re-solder that one component.

They still make those? I thought they were sought after old VW or 356 items...

But really...keep track of the mileage on the odo, best advice. I don't like to carry extra gas unless I'm headed for the boonies. Exterior cans? I'm thinking they wouldn't live long in theft prone Portland...and with gas stations all about, why carry extra gas?

To replace the sensor for the gauge you do need to drop the tank; repl. the gasket there too and also the emissions hoses & grommets.

Of course I learned this the hard way as most do. Furthermore, if I'm on red and stop on a forward incline long enough, the fuel pump goes dry. So I have to find level ground and about a minute of cranking to get going. Do that once or twice and you will keep gas in the tank.
I agree!!! Pretend like 1/4 is empty. No mental math to do and problem is solved.

Yes. You've got a great place to store gas: don't let the gauge go below a 1/4 tank.

In ireland a guy had a gallon of gas in the back of the car. He was in an accident and the gallon of gas ignited. He died.

Even you guys in the remote parts of the planet use jerry cans? I was hoping you had some vendors with huge gas tanks! Am so sick of our Pathfinder's ~300mi range - I was hoping for an aftermarket 25-30 gal tank.

I have that exact can except it's red and has no merc logo. Same spout, lid, etc., so it's the same manufacturer.
It won't fit a 14 inch rim, has to be 15"

Where do you find the "spare tire" gas can?

+100

Just store the gas in the tank. It stays fresh and ready to use. Just stop and fill up more often.

Long range tanks are a necessity out here. With 160L over two tanks the 20L Jerry is just insurance. Depending on the conditions in the desert, it gives me at least 600km range (on the black top it'll be double that). The other car is a 2011 76 series Landcruiser. The owner immediately dumped the stock 90L tank and replaced it with 170L.

I had a mate with a mid '90s Pathfinder (pretty good car overall), and he swapped out his stock tank for 150L. Highly recommended.

This was the view on the other side of the sand dune

Cheers,
