Bounced... from a sports bar
So this weekend a friend and I went up to San Jose to do some dirt biking at Hollister Hills and visit our friend at SJSU and crash in his dorm room. Getting on that campus takes an act of congress but anyway....
Saturday night after riding we came back and met up with him to walk around San Jose and find some dinner which turns out to be a massive undertaking but the funniest part by far was when we finally just said screw it and walked over to a what turned out to be a sports bar. We took a look at the menu and all agreed it was fine I was really hungry at this point so I open the door and before I even get a foot in some big black dude holds his hand out towards one of my friends and says no slippers in reference to the sandals he was wearing.... We all just started laughing our asses off since the restaurant portion was empty and the bar area was nowhere near as crowded as the multitude of bar and grills we had passed earlier. Thinking back most of the places we passed had bouncers two or three of them, I guess it's just a college city thing, I don't know it all seemed strange to me but not letting someone in because they're wearing sandals when you clearly need the business lol

Probably a health code thing. Did he have sox on? Because if he did you would of probably gotten served. The establishment should be more concerned that their employees wash their hands!

Years ago I walked up to a restrurant-bar and tried to enter. The guys at the door sniffed that patrons were required to wear a coat & tie. I was wearing a t-shirt & shorts!
I was a press photographer in those days so I had a sports coat and tie in the car. I had slacks but I did not put them on. I put on my coat and tie with my shorts and went back in. The place was mostly empty. I walked to the bar had one beer and left.

Is there any place in the world that demands coat and tie these days?
I remember taking a group to the Box Tree Restaurant in NYC years ago. They would only accept cash or personal check for payment, kept the front door locked and you could only get in w/ a reservation. By the time dinner was over, they wanted my party of eight GONE! Offered us the use of a private room as the guys got a little rowdy. I paid the bill, basically emptying my wallet and we got the hell out of there. Oh yea, you had to have coat and tie to get in the front door. Those were the good old days.

I think New Orleans restaurants will still stick you in the front (poor) dining room if you are not in "coat & tie after 5" -- thing is, the front room lets you peruse all the tourists coming in.

Doubtful about health code... it must be an atmosphere thing, I guess they are going for the whole ghost town thing .
Socks with sandals!? Sacrilege! It was raining, not that hard though so I guess shorts and sandals were an odd sight.

Technically you (and I) were denied entrance... I think of being bounced as being thrown out for unacceptable behavior after you have been there for awhile.

Yeah if you want to get technical, but bounced makes for a more entertaining story

So what sports bar were you at? I'm just curious since this is where I live. And, I agree with scottmandue about the denied vs. bounced.

You have to be inovative. In '63 a H.S. buddy & I drove across the US to NYC. We were put up by his grandfather (rich) who had standing accounts at the best restaurants, the theaters, and a box at the race track. He told us to just put meals, theater tickets, etc. on his accounts. One time we went into a fancy restaurant and the guy inside that greeted us told us we needed to wear jackets if we were to eat there. As California guys, we naturally had no shame. We looked around and saw the bus boys wearing a sort of uniform jacket for the restaurant. We told the guy to give us a couple of bus boy jackets. He did, we put them on and he led us to a table.

You were denied entrance on the basis of their dress code. I used to do it all the time when I worked doors. Some dress codes make a lot of sense, others not so much. The problem is that when a bar has a dress code, it has to be enforced uniformly or all hell breaks loose. I was Maitre 'd of a place 20 years ago that banned baseball caps and cell phones. If I let one guy in w/ a ball cap, all of the other guys with theirs in their back pockets were going to get real testy.
