There are some really nice areas in Bakersfield but you can't say that about oildale.
Back in 95, the company I worked for went teets up so I started a consulting bidness and landed a big contract, in Bakersfield. I'd drive up there early Monday morning and work all day, then get a hotel room at the sleazy 8 off the 99 and rosedale hwy. I could have stayed ay the La quinta across the street but it was too 'spensive at the time. I'd stay there until Friday afternoon when I'd drive home. Did that for almost a year until I got sick of it and sold the contract, longest year of my life. Made good money on the deal but it really wasn't worth it. One night I woke up to what sounded like a gazillion firecrackers. Seems some suspected bank robbers tried to run from the LA cops who chased them all the way to bakersfield, then then local boys forced them off the freeway right in front of the hotel and then they opened up on the van. The rumor was that there were a whole bunch of cops and they all re-loaded several times. Last edited by sammyg2; 12-01-2011 at 11:55 AM.. |

My brother lives in Bakersfield. He says it's a great place to raise a family. I go there for work at least once a month. Last summer while visiting him, I was installing a cargo box on my vehicle at around 8 pm. It was still in the '90s and no breeze. I promised myself that I wil stay indoors as much as possible when in Bakersfield. If the heat doesn't kill you the air quality will.

If there was ever an industrial, commercial town, Bakersfield is it. Other than the railroad, oil and all the farming for miles and miles, there is no reason for a town there.
I guess you could say that about a lot of places. At least where I live, it all started with the beach. People came down to Long Beach to cool off. You can't cool off naturally in Bakersfield until January when you freeze to death. |

We used to refer to Bakersfield as the "arm pit of the San Joaquin Valley."

I used to travel to Bako once a month from Cerritos.
Back in '07 Ibroke my back and right ankle pretty bad. 4 months with a cest brace from hips to sternum. 5 1/2 months with a cast I would travel in that shape for all but the first 3 weeks of the damage. In LA and OC 3 out of 10 people would open the door for me. Santa Barbara 5/10 Santa Maria to Paso Robles 7/10 Bakersfield 9/10. People who earn $100k elshere might make $90 k in Bako, But the people in LA at $100k have a $450k home while tha people in Bako have a $250k home and they tend to be happier

Used to fly a cargo run up there and lay over during the day. Did that run for about a year. Some nice parts but damn - some white trash areas that would make a Florida trailer park look like a multi-million dollar gated community... After a while you learn where the nice parts are (and there are some). The best part of flying that route was the layover apartment had decent cable tv and I got to leave every afternoon. I imagine it's a really depressing place to live in 24/7/365.
