I have HP, Xerox, Epson - laser and ink jet. All do their job well.
Ink jets are fine as long as you use them often so they don't dry up.
We buy refilled cartridges online for next to nothing.

If you buy office grade machines they seem to hold up fine for a number of years then you take them back to Office Max, get $50 off a new machine and start over.

We used to have them repaired. Now we buy $300 machines and replace every 4-5 years.

I recently picked up an Epson WorkForce 630 Multifunction machine for home from Sams for $50.
So far it is very nice little do it all machine. Ink jets cost about $6 each to replace (refilled online) and can be replaced individually. I print using color every week or so just to keep the jets flowing. Mulitfunctions are nice at home since you can scan, copy and print within the same footprint as a simple printer.

I wish I could consider these Dell suggestions but a Mac is not really compatible in all the ways it is on PC....or so it seems.

My sister has the exact same multifunction printer from Dell, and they have a mix of PCs and Macs. Dells website says it is Windows/Mac.

BTW, I'm not shilling for Dell, just making sure you know it is an option.

We have Samsung B/W lasers that have been really good, and a few Konica Minolta color lasers for printing sketches. They have been really good too, and the print quality on plain paper is damned good.
