Going in for my second colonoscopy a week from Friday, have some family history plus the prep they gave me last time was not ideal...10% occluded, and since it has been 5 years...well, off I go.
I didn't take the sedation last time, it was no issue, nothing too painful and unpleasant and it was interesting how they can fit a 100 foot hose up your butt...I'll probably watch this one again. Just going to install a seatbelt on my toilet though.....seriously, whoever could weaponize the prep could take over the world. Dennis |

He went and checked and somehow I was on the 10 year list....some head scratching went on and they apparently they realized that the written report and the reminder list were not in sync....so I got an expedited visit. Spoke to the specialist for the pre-exam, she noted that the operator had noted 5 years ago that my prep was not ideal and there was about 10% of the intestine that he couldn't see as there was fluid still in the intestine. I remember speaking with him about it during the procedure and he said I should have drank more water. I explained that I had followed the prep to the letter and he said, oh well....and continued. They have a suction device on the probe and they were able to vacuum some of the fluid up...but the intestine has a few curves and bumps...hard to do it all that way. Pre-exam specialist asked what prep I had used...and when I told her, she said that particular prep regime had not worked out all that well and they didn't use it anymore. According to her, some patients had enough fluid that they actually had to cancel the colonoscopy and redo the prep at a later date. So, will use the new prep...will watch carefully this time and see if there is an improvement. It is a neat procedure for sure, quite interesting! Last time they removed two polyps...hoping for zero this time.... Dennis |
ahh...so the view was obscured because the prep wasn't optimal. Well, sleep easy as there are lots of sub-optimal preps. Liquid stuff vacuums up pretty well. Thick stuff not so great. Chunky stuff plugs the ports on the scope and makes everyone frustrated. Hedge your bets by foregoing consumption of roughage and seeds for a couple days before starting your prep.
Lots of H20/clear liquids is good advice but be sure to read the instructions from your doc well as they may be different quite from those included with the prep and printed manufacturer. Good on you for getting it done! |
They need to install some windshield wipers on those scopes. SmileWavy

As best as I can remember the meds are not that strong, I sort of remember opening my eye and seeing the screen "oh look, they are watching some medical program... oh wait, those are my insides... think I will go back to sleep." |
Well I'm up at 2:00 am to do part two of my prep. I need to drink down a half gallon of salty **** starter in the new 2 hours. When not in the bathroom I'll be on here posting stuff. SmileWavy

Oh this is fun.........:(

Hang in there Paul the worst is behind you :D Sorry couldn't resist. I've had the procedure twice so been there done that. This procedure is/can be a life saver so worth the discomfort good luck to you.
|
This is about my 8th time actually. I had colon cancer back when I was 31. Family history of it.
|
I also skipped the sedation the 1st time. I was getting close to telling the guy to shoot me up during the procedure but then he said 'all done' - I also jogged home afterwards. only a couple of miles tho.
The next 2 times I did get the sedation as there was no way to walk home after they moved the center far away from my house. BTW - IIRC the pain is from the air inflation not the probe Be sure to watch the film 'War of the Worlds' and pay lots of attention to the telescopic probes the Martians use before your procedure! |
All done. Clear as the inside of a new PVC pipe. I'll be back in 3 years. SmileWavy

I'm a virgin no longer :) As stated many times the MoviPrep was the hardest. Worked all day yesterday with nothing more than a cup of coffee, a can of chicken broth, and a large Gatorade. Started the prep at 6 that evening. I got the liter down + a big class of water. Bloated but not much else happening. About 45 minutes later lots was happening... Got to sleep at midnight and started the second prep at 5:00 am. I premixed it the before going to bed and put in the refrigerator. Definitely easier to drink cold. Check in a 8:00 and out at 9:45. Did a mild sedative (through IV) and was kind of awake for procedure but not really caring. Felt nothing and time in was 15 minutes. Doc says nothing to be found and to see him again in 10 years! :) Wife drove me home and fixed a small plate of scrambled eggs and toast. Nap in front of the fire came quick and easy.
To those on the fence - do it. Very simple procedure. |

That is great! I just had my first a couple weeks ago as well. Prep was similar except I had to drink a 10 oz bottle of magnesium citrate (mild laxative) about an hour before the first Movi Prep. Chilled all and the taste was not bad. Drank chilled ginger ale as a chaser as the doctor recommended (to prevent nausea). They removed 4 polyps but all were benign. No pain or real discomfort whatsoever other than being very hungry after the liquid diet and clean out phase.
Personally, I actually have felt better (digestively) since the prep procedure. Cleaning out all the bacteria, etc after over half a century is probably somewhat beneficial... |
You don't want it too clean, ever heard of C-diff.
"A healthy colon is lined with bacterial flora — hundreds of species of bacteria. Many are beneficial, but some are not. In a small number of people, the Clostridium difficile (C. diff) bacteria makes up some of this flora." Quote:

manage your internal ecosystem by eating real yogurt afterwards - and a bacon chaser

Apparently my 'mild sedative' was no so much. My wife said she had an entire conversation with me...that I have no memory of. Apparently I was gone longer than I thought. :)
