This is Clark, the "ultimate dog tease" dog as a puppy. Clark Griswold is his full name. He's a Dutch Shepherd mix.

Today on my way back home from servicing 2 of my monthly accounts I noticed through the rear window of the truck in front of me a familiar head silhouette. I mean a Cattle Dog's ears are unmistakable!

Also just the mannerisms of how the dog's head was moving around while seating in the front seat of the truck. You just know.

So I followed the truck until it finally reached it's destination because I wanted to confirm my suspicions and if possible meet the little Heeler.

The driver turned out to be a construction superintendent and he had pulled over at one of the houses he is overseeing - right on the Intracoastal too not far from my house. He was more than hospitable and willing to tell me all about his little "Blueberry". I won't go into all the details but "Blueberry" was awesome just like most Heelers are and I can't tell you how enjoyable it was for me to give him some belly rubs and skritches!

I've never seen one with one Blue eye like this.....very cool!

Cleopatra, the feral Great Pyrenees that roams our property is in for Christmas.
It took 4 months of a concerted effort to get her in. Some grooming, a well dog checkup and some much deserved rest so she can be ready to do battle with the Coyotes again.

Cleopatra is beautiful!

Our eldest dog, Boser, is a 16 year old Dachshund. He's now deaf and blind. We've had him since he was little bitty and we were both young enough to still be living at home with our parents.

https://scontent.fmci1-4.fna.fbcdn.n...8g&oe=6587941A

We took him to the vet a week ago, fully expecting he'd had a stroke and was going to be put down. In short order our friend and vet informed us that he had Old Dog Vestibular Disease, aka Vertigo.

Apparently the only thing you can do is try to keep them comfortable, hydrated and fed. I was hoping for a few days, but apparently it can last for a few weeks. Mom had meetings today so he came into the shop with me and is sleeping like a rock.

Has anyone else dealt with this?

Henry Schmidt 12-19-2023 07:32 AM

I hate reading about so much loss but I appreciate the outpouring of love surrounding these beloved companions.

A few years ago I wrote the story of Cleopatra and posted it here.
This seems like a great time to post it again.

Quote:

A funny place this universe of ours.
A year and a half ago I bought my wife an English Cream Golden Retriever for Christmas. I’ve always had dogs but generally smaller dogs. I totally understand the large dog attraction now. He is a rock star.
When we picked up Baxter, I wanted a female and Judy wanted a male. It was her present, so she won.
After reading information about spay and neutering dogs, we made the informed decision to let Baxter mature before we did the procedure.
We have an older dog, “Shadow” with severe arthritis that is hanging in (chiropractic is helpful) but I’m guessing not that much longer. After a few months of Baxter exposure, I thought it might be cool to breed him and keep a female pup.
With that in mind, I started looking for a suitable female. During my search, I stumbled on to a Golden rescue website and thought just rescuing a pup might be a better solution.
The website I found had the perfect dog (I thought). It was an eight month old Great Pyrenees female.
I filled out the paper work and waited for a response. Much to my surprise, the response was; “NO. We appreciate your application but you have been deemed an irresponsible pet owner.
This decision was based on the fact that your dog is not neutered”. Wow! This rescue facility has deemed all pet owners with viable pets to be “irresponsible”. No show animal owners need apply.
I seriously thought about sending a nasty email (my usual MO) because I was angry about the rejection and the accusation of “irresponsibility” but in this case I just let it go.
A few months later, I’m wandering the property and spotted Baxter on the loose. I called him and he ran away. What the heck? I returned to the shop and found Baxter resting in my office.
A few days later, it happened again. It’s not like Baxter to ignore me.
The next time it happened I realized that the dog I was seeing was not Baxter. The dog kept hanging around so I took a few pictures and realized that what we had here was a young (8-9 month old) Great Pyrenees.
I posted a few pictures around town to try and locate the owner, no luck. We tried catching the dog with the same result, no luck. My wife can’t help but care for “needy” animals so she started to feed the dog.
In exchange, she started bring us presents from around the neighborhood. She brought mostly toys, shoes and the like. This “stealing” behavior lead Judy to name her Kleptomaniac, Cleo for short. During the next 3 months, we had occasion to catch her but she was so distressed about her captivity that we just let her go (or perhaps she escaped). She was like feeding a feral cat, she felt like ours but not really. A couple of weeks ago, she started bringing us “food” (first a seagull wing and then a rodent). Some suggested that she was trying to join our pack. We started leaving Baxter out on the patio on a tether so that they could play without her taking Baxter away. Like any young male, Baxter is easily distracted by female allure. We would let Shadow, our little Corgi mix out as well and everyone seemed to be getting along perfectly.
Well, a week or so ago, everyone was on the patio playing. Judy decided it was time to eat and when she let Baxter and Shadow in, Cleo followed. She’s had a bath, found a comfortable spot and she seemed to feel at home. She has been in and out regularly (house breaking is fun…. not) but at times it really seems like she would rather be in than out.
She is such a sweet dog that Klepto seemed inappropriate so Cleo became Cleopatra.
I’m writing this story because I wanted to share this experience with people who feel angry because they didn’t get something they wanted. It’s easy to internalize disappointment but sometimes you just have to wait until the universe is ready. I/we wanted that rescue dog and yet what we thought was rejection was really just timing. We were meant to have a space for Cleopatra and that’s how things worked out. To quote the Stones: You can't always get what you want, But if you try sometimes, well you might find, you get what you need.
Thanks for reading ………………… Henry
Cleopatra has been with us, all be it, free ranging ever since.

Why do people dock heeler's tails, Baz?

Off to the vet with the old girl today. 13.5 year old border collie is getting her second Librela shot. Amazing what this has done for her. I feel bad for not starting it earlier!

Why do they do that to any dog?

In some cases - they dock the dog's tail to conform with breed standards, as dumb as that sounds.

In the case of other dogs....herding and working classes especially - it's to give the dog less chance of having it's tail caught in something or pick up brambles in the brush, etc.

The irony is there are some breeds (Australian Cattle Dogs being one) that actually use their tail as a 'sort of' rudder while in flight. Assisting with balance while doing tight turns, etc.

It's against the law to dock a dog's tail in Australia.

Bill - I'm so happy to hear you found a treatment to help your sweet girl. Old age is such a tough opponent on these puppies. Please give her a hug and gentle nose bonk from all of us! :)

Have hunted over some english pointers where i was like 'why do they put reddish paint on the side of these dogs?'. It was the bloody tail leaving marks as it wagged around.

My Braques are docked. Occasionally see videos of Braques that are not docked and it isn't a good look. Not to say that's a good reason to do it but i've come to love the classic look of a docked tail on a bird dog.

Keean says hello. Still not sure what type of dog he is but definitely short hair St. Bernard.

Boy he’s a handful, but in a great way. He has all of the reported young St. Bernard traits and doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. He’s just a big silly dope.

It looks like my wife and I are adopting another dog  This dog wandered into the neighborhood out of the orange groves 4 weeks ago. Completely emaciated, severely matted, flea-infested and on death's door. I wonder to this day how he survived the bobcats, panthers, bears, snakes, gators and other predators around here! He spent 3 nights at the vet. They estimated he is 7 months old. 4 weeks later? He's coming along very nicely. And he's the most even-tempered, friendly, laid back dog one would ever meet :D

I scanned him with my dog scanner app and these were the results (the scanner has been fairly close to DNA tests in the past). Check out the AKC pic of the Rafeiro du Alentejo - it looks just like him. A Portuguese farm/ranch dog. He has very narrow hips which seems to indicate he's got some sort of running dog in him and that is probably the Borzoi. We were guessing he had some Whippet in him. We've named him Pete

Good find!
(I was talking to the dog.)

Crumbs on the floor but no half loaf of banana walnut bread.
Hmm. The only other time was eating a third of a round of greek cheese.
He got a 1/4lb of pan-fried ribeye last night. no oil or spice. That was a treat for both of us.

Found a couple old dogs on Saturday when I was walking mine. No collars, obviously well taken care of. Came back and got them, put up signs and 13 hours later all set.

They had someone feeding the dogs, apparently had belonged to the guys dad. She sees the signs on the way home, says, "That has to be our dogs." What are you talking about, she takes the sign, "I can put it back if it is not our dogs." They get home to find their dogs were not home. Women.

Curt - you and your better half are saints for taking care of "Pete"!

Thank you for that , my brother.

Thank you guys!! We really appreciate those comments. I hope he forgets those first 7 months quickly. He's now got a lifetime of companionship and fun ahead of him. He'll never be alone again.

Since this thread popped up I guess I can introduce you guys to my son's new pup.
They had two Olde English Bull dogs when they had their second and third children at the same time, ie twins. They had to put one down due to cancer and gave the other to a place that could administer the meds to her that they couldn't handle having two infants to take care of as well.
Time passed.
The twins grew. So did their big sister.
Next thing we know we're being told we have a new 'grandchild' coming into the family.
Meet Bubba.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1704498482.JPG
This picture is of him the first time we met him back in November at about 9 weeks old.
He's growing like a weed and doubled in size in about 3 weeks.
Last time we were down visiting this is what he looked like:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1704498676.JPG
He's been to a trainer who said that he thinks he'll be 250 lbs when fully grown.

Here's Pete. He's getting used to the good life inside a house. Only took a couple of days to potty train him! On his own after being scolded a few times, he started laying by the door when he needs to go out. He is a chewer though and we've got to constantly keep an eye on him - shoes, wall trim, furniture, books - it's all fair game for him. Currently crate-training him so we can leave him at the house. We also found out he does, indeed, know how to bark. And it's loud. There's a Great Dane in the neighborhood and the guy walks it while riding his bike - this sets off Pete for some reason. Nothing else bothers him.

porsche tech 01-13-2024 04:22 AM

Pete is a cutie! I recommend Off Leash Training. That’s what we did with our doodle. Electric collar that is the slightest little buzz when he won’t pay attention. We live on a golf course with a large lagoon across the fairway from us. Alligators there so we HAD to know he would come when called. He also does “place”, will heel and stay. Any time I walk across the room, if he follows me, he always comes around to my left side and walks next to me (even when I don’t say anything to him). Good news is once he got it figured out (which was VERY quickly) almost never have to use the shock feature. Best money we ever spent on him.
