guys, you're killing me here.

My condolences on so many recent losses, T-Rex being the most recent, and the others.

Beagle Issue

Hello Everyone,

We have a Beagle puppy and trying to house train him has been a bit of a chore.

He's 5 months old and very lively.

Most days we can get him to "go" outside but on other days without warning he will pee or poop inside.
Today my wife caught him walking and peeing while inside the house.

We have had many large dogs in our lives that never had this problem.

Also, this pup is very picky about his meals, sometimes he eats, sometimes he doesn't.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Thanks in advance.
Larry

If the random urination and so so appetite started around the same time, I would suspect urinary tract infection and get the pup to the Vet.
When they're small, things can go sideways in a hurry.
Best of luck.

my friend and his wife have had dogs all their lives. they are pros.

they both told me their Beagle was the toughest to train in all aspects. housebreaking, not chewing on the house, etc.

I've heard you let them out and don't let them in until they poop or pee. Praise and getting inside is the reward for doing their business. Don't scold him if he has an accident inside.

Feed my puppy, take it outside immediately. On leash. Walk in a specific area in the back yard and say "Do number six." Praise the puppy a bunch when it poops. Never had a poop accident in the house. And end up with a dog that will poop on demand before taking it anywhere.

Do the same with pee, comand is "Do your stuff." But as a puppy you just have to keep a close eye. Only a couple of accidents and YOU will learn when the puppy is sniffing for a place to go and rush that puppy outside giving the command and praising, Also take her on leash when I can as choose a particular are of the yard that we don't play in.

When the puppy has an accident I complain while cleaning it up..."Just look at this mess I have to clean up. etc." all the time I am cleaning up the mess. Puppy knows it did something wrong, but is not actually getting punished.

Put a newspaper by the door. If the dog has a accident on the paper, just pick it up and replace it not saying anything positive or negative.

It is natural for a dog to not use the restroom in it's home.

My pup did not want to be outside during his first winter.
I'd shovel off or crush down a path and show him it was really great.
As soon as he went in the snow he'd get a treat then and there and big sqeeky praise voice. Instant gratification.
He'd only get a treat for going outside.

Also, it's important to cover up any accident's scent quickly and stop repeat behavior asap.
Take poop outside where it belongs and clean the spot.
Use lysol or chemical.
Dog is not allowed to claim any area inside the house with its smell.

This last puppy I was also caring for my elder Mom with dementia so couldn't watch the puppy as much as I would of liked. Just propped the back screen door open (it was early spring so not to hot or cold and no bugs yet). Puppy never even tried to go inside, always went outside by herself since the door was open anyway.

After a little over a month, closed the back door and put paper down. She always barked to have someone open the door for her.

Not long after she started barking, instead of just letting her out. I took her on leash and did the training to go on command thing.

Now if I ask her if she wants to go for a ride, she goes to the back door and speaks so she can use the restroom before going for a ride.

Wow!!!! Thanks Baz

This little feller looks just like a little guy I nearly wanted to put in my pocket years back while looking for a home. The sellers had a little note on the back door asking that we not let their “killer puppy” out while we check out the house. So naturally I crack the back door and peek out expecting to find a larger breed of dog. Seeing nothing, I open the door all the way and then look down. Literally this is how I was being looked at by the little guy.

So sorry for your loss, YP. What a beautiful girl! Great name too. 17 years is a good run. I can tell she was an amazing companion and I'm sure there's huge emptiness you are feeling right now. Take some comfort in knowing she's out of pain and had an amazing life with her humans.

Mine will be 14 next year and I think about the inevitable all the time. Needless to say...they never lack for loving and care. And they deserve it - and more.

Hang in there buddy.....and sorry again.

I know this doesn't make it any easier but Justice had a good long life with great people. She was a good looking little dog.
Very sorry for your loss.
