Senile agitation - is that a thing in dogs?

Our Teddy Bear is about to turn 12, and he's getting grumpier as the days go on. He's started growling at my wife when she orders him off the couch. Yesterday he went to the groomer, same groomer who has clipped him since he was a puppy, and when she started his bath he snarled and tried to bite her.

He's got moles popping up all over, back issues, congestive heart failure, goopy eyes, and he snores louder than ever. Probably a lot to be grumpy about.

Doggy dementia is a thing. It could be that or it could be that he's just in pain with all of his health issues. Sorry to say it maybe time to consider next steps. Our last girl that we had to put down a few years ago was 18 or 19 at the time. Her teeth were so bad and the vet wouldn't deal with her because of her age. That kind of became the thing that led us down the path of euthanasia. She was also losing control of her bladder and having little mini strokes as well.

Took the boys out for first hunt in a year. Ollie is a rock star at this game. His little
bro did find a bird though. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...3ce1ee359c.jpg

Gorgeous GSD Steve !

Steve Carlton 12-10-2024 06:46 PM

Thanks, Matt! Just got her spayed and chipped today. She's not so much her frisky self right now.

Her mother (a sable GSD) had a litter almost a month ago, and they wanted another sable female for breeding. The last of 8 pups was a sable female. They liked my standard poodle Zora, so this little one is Zora's namesake. I should be visiting the new litter this Sunday. Here's Zora II:

Back at home, not hungry for soaked kibble as recommended by the vet. Ears at 90 degrees say no thanks. Ate very little. She's in pain.

Gave her some canned food and she ate that. She'll be much better tomorrow, I'm sure.
