What you need to know about Blue Heelers:

I read that ^ before I decided on a Heeler and it's all true but understated. If you don't have an abundance of energy and time, I would recommend a different breed of dog. What's not mentioned is the fact that they are half Dingo. That stubborn, wild personality is exhibited constantly. Owning a Heeler is wonderful but can be exhausting. This is a breed for a very active owner who has a large property

I'm now watching Don Sullivan "Training the Perfect Dog" show and like his methods. Mild correction collar and using a lightweight leash means that the relationship rules are the same on or off leash and regardless of distance. He recommends teaching the 'heel' command at the very end and only when needed in order to let the dog do their natural sniffing and wandering. It seems natural.
I was watching Cesar Millan before and some people commented that he was cruel and that physical domination doesn't work. Always suspected using his hand touch 'bite to the side' correction would lead to getting an arm bit by the wrong dog at the wrong time. The video of him training Shadow the husky https://atlantablackstar.com/2024/10/20/dog-whisperer-cesar-millan-animal-abuse/ does not bode well. Maybe it works in very limited circumstances briefly with super aggressive types but creating fear only leads to future aggression or a broken mind dog. |

There's been a cold snap here recently. It got me thinking. I do everything I can to keep the house nice and warm. Insulation, thermally efficient windows, make sure the doors seal when they're shut.
Then we get a dumb hound dog that has to go in and out 27 times a day. We're either letting her out, letting her in, or opening the door to yell at her to stop howling at the neighbor dog, or the squirrel, or the possum, or that leaf, or some invisible thing that apparently only she can see. |
