Okay, let's go, let's go
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1485044158.jpg Uh, it is raining, not stepping off the porch. You are totally getting wet right now, what do you mean, let's go? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1485044283.jpg |
A friend of mine taught his dog to drive his boat so he can drink beer.

I'm not a fan of shock collars but for 35 bucks on flea bay, I picked up a remote controlled, dual sound and shock collar.
I set it at "2" on the 1-5 scale and have so far only used the sound alert. Beeps like a cell phone. The puppy immediately stops yammering and does not seem to shy away when I put it on in the morning like other dogs I have seen....this is my first unit. Anyways, thought someone may appreciate the input on these things. Charges off a USB or 110v, 3 days on the collar, 6 on the remote. Even w/o the collar she tends to bark less. I may pick up another collar as the remote controls 2 units. |

Found this today.
I can't keep it. Super friendly. I'm in SC. She has a rabies tag from Harrison, OH. I'm going to take her my my vet's office tomorrow and have her scanned for a 'chip'. Judging by her overall condition (dirty, fleas, hungry, etc) I would guess she's been out on her own for a while. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1485206729.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1485206729.jpg Yes, I know I can call Harrison and give them the rabies tag number. I did that. Was told the last known owners last name and last known street name. They wouldn't give me a phone number, so I guess I'll write them a letter. lol. |
Quote:
Wonder if you could give your number to pass on to the owners, as listed on their records. Alternatively - post on FB with alert to anyone in Harrison, Ohio. Post on Harrison, Ohio PD - or City Hall or petfinder http://www.countyoffice.org/harrison-oh-animal-shelters/ or ??? Here's the Cincinnati Craigslist also - she may be in lost and found/pets section or you could post an ad.... I would hope the owners are anxious to get her back. I still have a very poor opinion of humans who lose their companions. Whether 2 or 4 legged.... |
You could also drop her off at the local shelter, and they could do the footwork on locating the owner.
A Yellow Lab is also a very adoptable breed, especially with her friendly personality (is there such a thing as a Lab that doesn't have a friendly personality?) Throw them a few bucks to reimburse for their trouble. I'm happy to donate and others would be too. Keep us posted. |
I'm taking her down this morning to be scanned. Maybe better info there.
My wife has been working the facebook angle, as I do not facebook. |
Ok.. Finally got more info from the Harrison animal control office.
Unfortunately, the info does not match. Their records show that this tag on her collar belongs to a black and white miniature schnauzer. So ... what does this mean? Why would this dog, in SC, be wearing the tag from a different dog in OH? |
Quote:
The answer could lie with the owners of the schnauzer. Like I said before, if you could forward your phone number to them and allow them to contact you, maybe that would at least allow a possibility she is returned to her owner. Who knows. Otherwise the FB avenue might yield results or as I said, you could drop her at the local shelter with a donation - labs are very adoptable. |
Well... the rabies tag comes back with completely different info.
Now it's starting to look like a dog with some random tags thrown on the collar. I am hesitant to get in the middle of this now and have decided that we are going to contact a local no-kill shelter, give them all info, and let them have at it. If there is something shady going on, then the dog has a shot at a new family. If the current owners are just dickbags... well, I can't fix stupid. Somebody on facebook said that she is probably "too old" to get adopted, and would likely just get "put down". Nobody wanted Aunt Eunice when she got old, but we didn't put her down. Is a no-kill shelter the dog equivalent of a retirement home? She's nice enough to keep (not Eunice), but my germane shepherd does not seem to cotton to the idea. |

Thanks for the update Cash..... Don't let anyone tell you a dog isn't adoptable...that's TOTAL BS and pisses me OFF to NO END when all these freaking "experts" start yabbering on and on like they are the know all to everything DOG!!!!!!!!:mad::mad: Just because she's in her twilight years doesn't mean CHIT when it comes to adoption! I think your plan to contact a local shelter is a VERY prudent one on several levels. Especially when you explain to the shelter folks all the research you have already accomplished (type it all out on paper for them if possible) on trying to track down the owner through rabies tag and chip, etc. And again....leaving some cash to defray their expenses would be a very generous and accommodating move. You are smart not to upset the home dynamic with your shepherd. As I said before a yellow lab - even an older one - will adopt fairly quickly and likely end up in a great home, hopefully with kids. Thanks for all you are doing, man.....SmileWavy |

It's good she found you. The shelter may also work with rescue groups to get dogs adopted. |
If she were closer I'd consider taking her in.
|
If she were closer I already would have.
|
A no-kill shelter is just that. They keep the animals until someone adopts/rescues them.
And one can't assume that the previous owner dumped the dog or mistreated it. Many dogs run off because they just wanna feel the wind in their ears. Coupla summers ago, ours was in the back yard for a 10 minute potty break and was not there when I called for him to come back in. The idiot TWC dudes had left the gate open on the far end of the yard... after I had asked them to make sure they latched it when they left. After putting it on our neighborhood email listserv and getting no results for a coupla hours, a neighbor three houses down walked over and showed me a Facebook post he had received from some friends four blocks away. He recognized him as ours and his friends' post said they had him in their back yard. He called them on his phone to make sure they were home and I went to get him. After that, I always check behind anyone who has to go in our backyard before letting him out because that taught me that it's not smart to trust them to be conscientious. Final update on the yellow lab:
The first tag I checked was not a rabies tag - it was a license. The second tag was a rabies tag. After talking to the shelter administrator yesterday, my wife decided to roll the dice and call the number provided by the vet who issued the rabies tag. The guy who answered said the dog was his, but that somebody was supposed to be watching after it while he was working out of town. He gave my wife that person's number. Wife called person #2, who said it was not convenient for her to come get the dog but that she would meet me at the gas station near her house. She said she really wanted to get the dog back soon because the other dogs missed it. Never told my wife "thanks" or anything. The woman showed up at the gas station and asked me how I ended up with the dog. I told her the story... that the dog was at that gas station and they were going to have it picked up because it kept going into the store. I asked around and nobody knew who it belonged to, and being on the side of a busy highway made me concerned that it would get killed. The woman told me, "Oh... well, she's never crossed the highway before." I explained to her that the county has a leash law, and that she was lucky to have the dog back; that I had tracked the owner down by the rabies tag that was 4 years out of date, and that by the way, that is also a law. The local clinic only charges $8 for a rabies shot. The woman was completely dismissive, and starting to get snippy. Hell, it ain't my fault she's irresponsible. Turns out the license tag is so old, that the county that issued it has re-issued the number - which explains why I was getting conflicting information. It is probably also 4 years old, like the rabies tag. Before she left, she asked me if I had seen the other dogs - because they are missing also. |

I stand by my comment in an earlier post: Quote:
Adults are not babies...when they neglect taking care of their babies...2 or 4 legged.....there should be consequences. That dog would have been better off at the shelter where she would have been adopted into a nice home. Not faulting you Cash....just stating my opinion.... |
I also feel that since the dog was infested with fleas when she was found...and the lady mentioned other missing dogs...a call to the local animal welfare services is in order. She could be a hoarder - which explains her comment about the other dogs and not wanting you to come to her - but meet you at the gas station. She's hiding something. . Those people who hoard animals are always neglectful of their well being.

Even though it doesn't seem like it now, that is certainly a good long life for any dog, particularly a Bull Terrier.
Sorry to hear of the loss of your pup. |
Yes, he had a great life - always up for a boat ride

They are such great dogs with kids!
Many people think that they are some type of pit bull. A friend of mine had one and he was the nicest dog with people and especially kids. |
Oh, fount of collective wisdom . . .
What can you tell me good/bad/indifferent on getting a Shetland Sheepdog puppy in late spring/early summer? My wife just retired & she is on the warpath for a dog. It has to blend with an existing 3 year old Queen of the House cat. We have a good fenced backyard for ‘the business’ and self-exercise & a great neighborhood & city for leashed walks. I am committed to properly train it btw. I had a Sheltie-cross as a kid so I have a rough knowledge. And we have discussed a shelter dog & the answer is no. Long ago, we have both had success & failures with that. Thanks Ian |
Shelties are prone to some genetic problems due to overbreeding, I can tell you that.
Will want a lot of exercise. Small sheepdog is still a small working dog. |

We have researched a lot of breeds & it seems most have some genetic issue or other but breeders are offering some testing for what that is worth. Ian |
Mom had a Sheltie that had skin problems on her little snout. We put sunscreen on her all the time. When I was young and in shape, I ran that dog at about a 6 minute mile pace for a shade under 12 miles. Got back to the house, let her out back, and she went to running laps around the yard, as she was given to doing. Great little dog, not as cuddly as the one I have now, but a sweetheart. She would herd my kids when they were little.

Found this on the Amazon Prime video page. I know we have some big fans of these little guys on the forum. I know nothing about the 2016 film other than it's in the comedy drama genre.
