Hey, good for you, Scooter. I admire how you and your wife made a decision and followed through with it. BUT, a true petrol head will need a fix sooner or later...

nostatic 08-08-2012 02:48 PM

Good on ya. I totally get what you're thinking and aspire to simplify in the next few years. I especially appreciate the bike angle. If things get boring, pick up a mountain bike :D

Check back in Febuary when you're riding in the dark, in pouring rain, & thirty five degree weather. I hope you have a short commute. I'm just jealous, I'd lose my car if I didn't have a nine year old. Still, I hate riding in cold rain. Good luck Scott.

Scooter 08-08-2012 03:31 PM

Commute is either home office or a short office commute if desired. I live and work downtown. I have no problem using the commuter car if necessary, but will try to ride as much as possible.

Not all will be. I doubt I will ever own another Porsche and the Boxster wouldn't be here without the wife. She wanted it, I have played with it a bit and I'm all done.

I won't be buying a Smart Car.

Does anyone make a Dumb one? That's my speed.

mikeesik 08-08-2012 05:45 PM

You sold your-914/6. I'm sorry .
Am very curious on what you think of the clown car. I'd love to try one.

Zeke 08-08-2012 05:49 PM

Where do you get "clown car?"

I've always called it that, since the vehicle came out.
Reminds me when I went to the circus a child . I'd see clowns driving miniature cars.

Jeez.
We had a Smart for a year.
Well, 10 months - the other 2 months, in and out of the shop.
Is it too late to take it back?
You should keep a blog (here) Re: breakdowns: when/where/what.

When it was running, what was it like-please.

rode like a buckboard.
the 1-2 shift was like waiting for the second coming of Christ .
not particularly fuel efficient.
nice and easy to get around, fun to drive, in the city.
highway speeds - not really acceptable.
roomy, comfortable enough, in the front.

Scooter! Your screen name is Scooter! :D

Seriously, I hope you enjoy the change.

And just for fun, please post a pic of your 914-6... would love to see it.

I love the Smart. It has plenty of room and keeps up with traffic just fine. Maybe because my wife and I weigh less together than many fully grown men. I am averaging 38 mpg, with mostly in-town driving. Parking is fantastic and I am really enjoying the sequential paddle shift transmission. I am hoping (knock on wood) that it will be reliable enough...we will have to see. I don't want this thread to be about the Smart car. It's about efficiency, not the daily driver. To each his own I guess.

Here is a pic of the 914-6 along with two of my past 911s (purple and brown):

Hey Scott,

I agree with Todd......good on ya!

I like the part you are not saying goodbye to the Porsche community. That shows where your heart is. Your brain is obviously engaged with this decision and that's not a bad thing.

I've been trying to cut back on my "baggage" too........although it would be hard for me to cut loose of my tub - there's other stuff to lose...

This is very encouraging - thanks for your post and best of luck! SmileWavy

Beautiful 914-6, Scott... thanks for posting. Those 911's are really nice, too.

Schumi 08-08-2012 11:27 PM

At one point I owned 5 cars (edit- I was about 18 years old at that point. They were not all very expensive vehicles...) . Through lots of moving the cars were sold off and so was a lot of junk (some just thrown away)

I sold my Boxster S at a significant loss vs. what I paid for it recently because I couldn't stand the sight of it parked in the back lot at work collecting dirt and not being driven, after I bought my Lotus.

I've now bought a motorcycle and, being here in LA, could really see myself not actually needing a car for the first time since I started driving. The bike is all I need. I don't do big shopping, groceries, etc- I can walk to the market and carry my laundry to the laundromat across the street- I buy lots of large things online or have things delivered....

My S.O. has a practical, 4 door Audi but I never even find myself really needing to use it for utility.

If I was in a different situation where I lived alone, I could see not owning a 4 wheel street car. Which would be great... more money for 4 wheeled... open wheel... race cars.

Part of my life pruning may eventually entail selling the lotus for as much if not more than I paid for it (yay exotics) and moving to an island where all I would need is a motorcycle and a gallon of gas per month.

I'll take an educated guess..... Dan Root? :) :D

Nice Focus. Is that a carbon saddle?

I know what you mean about simplifying. I recently sold my wife's beautiful 87 Carrera for a Prius. I'm holding on to my '79 targa though.
