Porsche-less
 

Well, everything has been official for a few days now and I am officially Porsche-less.

My wife and I have been making some very positive changes in our lives over the last two years and I recently decided that I needed a break from owning a Porsche for a while, so my 914-6 was shipped out and delivered to its new owner this past week.

I know it is not going to be the popular consensus, but I am very happy with my decision. I call the changes we've made "life efficiency" and it is nearly complete. Life efficiency includes making our life as simple as possible, with a less-is-more concept. Besides buying a condo and selling our house, we now have only one car for my wife's daily commute and my main mode of transportation is a bicycle. We just don't need multiple cars for two people. I will use the commuter car when necessary, but I plan on commuting on the bike all year (yes, in the rain too).

I'm not leaving the Porsche community, just taking a break from all the work that goes along with owning a classic car. The locals haven't ostracized me yet, even after they saw the new daily driver car, which is a whole story in itself.

I just hope u don't have regrets. An older P car is a lot more work than a newer one. Agreed. Condo living - big change ie. space, politics, no yard. You are going thru a lot of changes. My wife and I agreed that we can handle our house/yard for another 5-10 years but we review it yearly. The P car? Somebody will have to pry my fingers off the steering wheel:):):)

Absolutely. Efficiency. :)

BTW: I am 65 lbs. lighter than when I started being more efficient.

I am down to 3 cars from 9 at my peak of which one is new with a warranty.
I would love to ride my bike to work but am convinced I'd be minced meat within a year or two due to the San Fernando Valley traffic.
We have a pretty simple life without TV, without big vacations and home ownership etc.
That said, you can't over-simplify or it gets boring. I like to have one hobby car at least and put it through its paces ...

I agree 110%. No concern about being boring. My wife and I are enjoying other things besides cars to keep life exciting. Biking for example, keeps us in shape and we really enjoy riding together.

Oh dear Christ you sold a Porsche for a smart. Your maintenance bills likely just tripled. I owned a 2005 passion cabrio for 18 months/17k kilometres. I put over $2000 in maintenance into that POS. I spend probably less than half that on p-car maintenance in a year. Door handles. Seriously, when was the last time you had to replace door handles? I had to replace both, 2 weeks apart. EGR valve, leaky gas tank, leaky a/c, it was at most 2 months between repairs.

I hope yours ends up being less problematic than mine.

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with the Smart. Hopefully, we will be better off. The Smart did not replace the Porsche, it replaced a 1991 Isuzu Trooper we had up until yesterday.

It's not a matter of being back. I am not leaving. I just need a break in ownership for a while. I have made too many good friends in the Porsche community to just leave.

Still don't understand what's wrong with idling the car - just keeping it in the garage and not doing anything with it. I have the feeling that all air cooled Porsche stuff is rising in price steeply these days. My 993 hasn't gotten a lot of miles of late, being down for trans rebuild and myself getting "distracted" with a new job. But it sure beats selling it and starting over with a pig in a poke in a couple years down the road.

Of course, if you were really tired of your 914 and you want a 911 soon, we understand. :D

I've owned 9 Porsches, 7 in the last 10 years. Each one, I have spent a lot of time and effort to modify it in my own way. So, I am definitely not scared of starting over. I had the 914-6 for about 6 months and put a lot of work into it as well. It just turned out to not be the right car for me.

I have been very, very involved with the Porsche scene over the years. So much so, that it has caused me to be inattentive to other areas of my life. Consciously being without has given me a new sense of freedom. It will be a good break for a while.

That's a fact. You could probably win a local political campaign, just based on how many Porsche people you know! I'm happy to hear you're sticking around. I admire your change in lifestyle, but it must've been hard to part ways with your 914-6, which was the perfect color to blend into the scenery and fly under the radar. Where is it now?

Are you completely happy with the changes then good for you, but the old adages:
"you can't take it with you"
"you won't live for ever" and
"if not now when?"
are all true.......

Finance sacrifice can be a noble cause, but it can also become an obsession.
