Either of these would have substantially less decibels than a shotgun, right? 22 long being louder - but a louder "crack" than a boom?

I definitely want to trap it and take it for a ride or drop it instantly.

One of my neighbors has to have a 22 rifle.

A subsonic 22 AKA cb long is quieter than an air gun if used in a closed breach rifle. They will not cycle an automatic.
The crack you hear from a .22 is the round breaking the sound barrier, if you keep the round subsonic there is no crack.
I have removed several unwanted critters in my neighborhood with this setup.

Ground Hogs will always have more than one exit......you have to find them all. Then, drop a smoke bomb in the hole and then then block it off. If there are three holes, drop it down two of them and block them both. Leave only one one exit and stand there with either a baseball bat or a pellet gun. The holes are always at an angle so you can hide above the hole backside just be still and quiet. It will exit a bit dazed from the smoke and then kaboom you whack it.

Do not let the PITA folks on board sway your opinion here, this is a rodent and nothing else. It was put on this earth to be snuffed.

I use a Hav-A-Hart trap, then submerge it in a 55 gal plastic trashcan, filled with water. It works and doesn't get the neighbors mad...

your real problem will not be solved by killing this marmot

you have habitat they like, so once you kill this one, another one will move in...

you need to change the habitat so they don't like living there anymore

True dat... And you can't keep enough lead in the air to "change the habitat" enough to dissuade them. That's one of the beauties of "ground hog" or "rock chuck" shooting - find the habitat, and new targets just keep coming back. Unless you enjoy the sport, you need to make some changes, or they will be back. And back again. And again...

I hear what you guys are sayin' about the habitat, but that's not an "absolute" imo. That might be the case, but I'd eliminate this one first....odds are that Bob has no choice about habitat looking at the pic. Bob, I like the idea of a .22 also (heck, I'd use my .22lr and wouldn't think twice about the noise), but please take a couple of practice shots with the ammo you'll use from the approx. distance you'll be shooting from to make sure you'll hit where you aim with a strange gun. That's why my LEO tennant missed. He shoots a LOT, but .223s and .308s, etc. from several hundred yards out, and not a .22 short at 50 ft. Bottom line, make it count...if in doubt, #6 shot . Good luck!

I'd blast one before I'd drown one, but that's just me...I realize some don't have the option.

sure, eliminate this one first then figure out how to keep them away from whatever your issue is with them -- garden, out buildings, etc.

a yard with a dog patrol works pretty well

Guide to Obtaining a Legal Silencer
Presented by Silencer Research LLC
This guide is a tool to help you on the way to purchasing a legal silencer in the United States. The best source of information is usually your local or area Class 3 dealer.
Can I own a silencer? Silencers have never been illegal under federal law; they have only been regulated and taxed. This means that if your state doesn’t prohibit ownership of silencers, you can probably buy one. Here are some things you also need to know.
• Must be 21 years old when purchasing from a dealer
• Typically, if you can buy an handgun, you can buy a silencer
• Must not have been convicted of a felony or pleaded guilty to
domestic violence charge(s)
• Must be a United States Citizen
The following states allow civilian ownership of silencers. AL, AR, AK, AZ, CO, CT, FL, GA, ID, IN, KY, LA, ME, MD, MS, MT, NE, NV, NH, NM, NC, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI, and WY. If your state isn’t listed here, you will not be able to own a silencer. It is my understanding that Washington State allows possession, but not the use of silencers.
I can buy one, so which one should I get? This question is one of the reasons I started Silencer Research LLC. I get this question more than any other and there is no correct answer. I present data on my website which should assist you in making this critical decision. Some silencers are just better than others. While some silencers may be perfect for me, they may not be as well suited for you and your purpose. Spend some time on Silencer Research.com and use the Forums to ask any questions you may have.
I have picked my silencer, now what? You must locate a Class 3 dealer in your state. Unless you are a federal firearms license holder (Type 01 or Type 07) you have to use the services of a Class 3 dealer. Lists of these dealers are being created for this guide, but in the mean time contact the manufacturer of the silencer you picked and ask them for a recommendation. Some manufacturers have a list on their website. These lists are generally not complete, so call them. The dealer should be able to help you will all the paperwork from there. If you want to do more of the work by yourself read on.
The Basic steps to obtain a silencer are listed below:
• Make sure you can own one in your state
• Pick a silencer to buy
• Find a Class 3 Dealer
• Fill out and complete the required paperwork IN DUPLICATE
• If an individual, obtain Law Enforcement signature on the forms
be fingerprinted and paste or tape two photographs of yourself
onto the forms
• If a Corporation or Trust, you may skip the above step
• Pay the $200 Transfer Tax to BATFE
• Wait for your paperwork to clear
• Fill out a ATF Form 4473
• Take your silencer home

Silencers are used around the world in many countries where noise is an issue. Europe has had them for years and its not any hassle to obtain one.

Going to have to wait until Tuesday.

Going to put the trap out today with apples.

Look at its cute little ears.

OOOOHH my trigger finger is twitching.......

If you really need to shoot it, my first choice would be a .17 HMR pretty quiet really and

totally 1 shot lethal.

This is a good time to hone in on your sniper skills. Place the appropriate bate near the entrance of his condo and sit steady with your .177 rifle.

Oh heck yes it's one shot lethal at 2550fps.

I have not see hide nor hair of him since I put the trap out.
