bought a sailboat today, by accident

One of my clients is moving back to the UK, and mentioned he had to get rid of a sailboat. What type, I asked?

McVay 18' Minuet.

I've loved them since I was a kid... a scaled down version of the Bluenose. The Minuet is a perfect small open sailboat. Light and forgiving, and easy to manage (both in & out of the water). There are only 2-3 of these boats locally, so I asked which one it is.

Turns out it's the exact boat I missed out on this spring, and kicked myself about all summer. Except now it's all cleaned up, debugged (stored for 5 years), and is $1000 less.

So basically, I had no defenses and bought it right then & there.

So you're in need of a C4 trailer hitch for the mini van?

Oh I've bought, sold and sunk plenty of small sailboats now. I think this is #8. I have a Hobie 16, and half-own a MacGregor 22 as well. I'll probably sell my Hobie to make room for this one.

This one is *just right* for my needs right now. Small, trailerable, easy to launch & sail alone. But it's a keelboat and will be steady and a great boat to get the kids out on (as opposed to the Hobie).

Plus, they look GREAT sitting at a mooring:

Thanks! Yes, it's one of those designs that's just "right". And it is just the right boat for me (and the kids) for the next few years.

No kidding, I would love to find a trailer hitch for mine! I used the tow hook to pull the docks out at the cottage a few weeks ago. Pretty amazing what a 964 c4 will do with the diffs locked!!

Seriously..if it's a van doing the launching? Much easier to see what you're doing with a trailer hitch mounted on the front...

Jake,

Way to go!

I think it was one of these boats which graced the waters next to the Annapolis causeway this summer. Looks like it weighed half a ton. The guy launched it with a Jetta and had to unhook the trailer and push the trailer into deeper water, 'cause he couldn't get into water deep enough to float her off the trailer.

I loved watching him sail it from the Centre. It was so stiff in all kinds of wind.

Will you have time for a couple of sail before she goes away for the winter?

I agree, perfect day sailer with kids.

Enjoy.
Les

I'm loving that boat. Did it come with a trailer? That would make it great, could take it home for the winter. Should be a good learner boat for the kids.

Cheers Richard

No, but I have good hiding spots. One for the boat, and one for me (just in case)

Nope! My nonsense is tolerated, as long as she has a good working car, room for it in the garage, and my land & sea fleet is stored out of sight.

Still, she's not going to learn of this boat till I get some fiberglass work & paint done. Then it'll magically appear on a mooring at her family cottage. She likes Minuets anyway, she's actually noticed them enough to point them out.

Thanks Les! No, it'll go right into a shop for the winter to get some work done. It's well past sailing season for me, I didn't even get my hobie out this year. Next summer both kids will be "boatable" ages. It's a great little sailboat for picnics... too excited!

They are! I've had times where I've been without a car, and hitch-hiked to work every day... but I have never been without a sailboat since I was 16.

No trailer, just that cradle. I'll probably whip one up next year, sure does make life easier. I don't like being dependant on access to a boom truck!

couple more Minuet pics:

You guys are too polite to ask, and I'm too impolite to get a great deal and NOT gloat about it... $1200!!

^^ well I'm not too polite to offer a high five on a great deal, is that complete with rig and sails, turn key so to say? Does it have a self bailing cockpit? SWEET!
I'd look into a sliding tung trailer to help launch the full keel depth.
What repair projects do you see needed?

Sounds like your wife will be happy with it once she is underway.

Cheers Richard

Sweet boat, graceful lines. Reminds me a bit of my Dragon:

It has been surprisingly cheap to own, sailboats have that benefit, motor boats on the other hand get very expensive very quickly. Last time something broke: the jib-stay below deck portion ....it cost $6 to fix it.

AAAhhhh.... the dragon is the sexiest sailboat ever made. There used to be one here locally, but it was a worn out, wormy old thing by the time I paid any attention to it. Sure looked graceful sitting at a mooring, and fantastic under sail.
