Henry, it is always great to see a gun that is built so the screw slots all line up. As a side note, I am buying the Hawken that Doug Knoell made about 25 years ago with a barrel that was given to him by the man that started CVA and the barrel is #00099. He made everything else, even the lock, double set trigger, trigger guard, poured nose cap and the wood which is a piece of French walnut. It has his border patrol name badge inlet into the stock. I'll post a couple of picts when I pick it up next week. I plan to shoot our monthly M/L match with it on 2 Feb.

Sorry Henry, I would love to be able to help, but that rifle lies far outside of my limited knowledge of firearms. There were quite a variety of Germanic gun makers at one time, building single shots for Schuetzen competition; while many had their own proprietary set trigger designs, many used those made by specialty manufacturers. Most were double set, but there was still a bewildering array of single set designs as well.

Volumes have been written about these rifles. I actually own some of those volumes, but have only given them a cursory glance over the years. It's just not an area that's captured my interest (yet...). Let me check a few of them and see what I can find.

Well, that was easier than I thought it would be. Good old Frank de Haas and his tome on the single shot comes through again. This may not be the whole story, but it looks like a darn good start. If you want, I'll make better copies of the whole article and send it your way.

Another very cool rifle, Henry.

How about a .50 caliber flinter I built from a kit as a teenager. Used to hunt quite a bit with this one; surprisingly effective on deer. Load is 100 grains of FFFg, .495" round ball (180 grains), .015" pillow ticking patch lubed with bore butter - good for over 1,900 fps from the 43" barrel on this thing. Stock is cherry, finished with about six months worth of linseed oil rubbed in every day after school. I'll tell you what, too - the flinters sure teach a guy to shoot. Hold and follow through are paramount.

Flint was removed. What you are seeing is a piece of leather used to hold the flint.

Hows this for something old school unusual but not unique?
30-06 Springfield 03A3 sporterized for hunting.This one is zeroed at 300 yards. Was last used in Alaska to shoot a Big Horn sheep before I knew better.

Was the German acquaintance dead at the time?

My plinking and target load for the flinter is 60 grains, John. It's zeroed at about 100 yards with the lighter load, and just about on at 150 with the hunting load.

Henry, I let a very purty Sedgely Springfield go about ten years ago. I'm going to have to find me another sporterized Springfield some day. All of my bolt guns these days are Model 70's.

Put it this way tabby - even though my father in law speaks fluent German, there wasn't much haggling over that old Walther...

While I am not even close to you guys with your extensive collections I'm willing to share some that I got from my dad.
The first is a K98 Mauser he had sporterized in Belgium right after the war. It has a bent bolt which has armory markings.
The second is a 9mm Luger which was a UBoat Naval issue.
And last was his service issue 1914 production 1911.
