I agree the pistol would be a real hoot for plinking. I might even have to get one. My younger son is actively pursuing one, but is finding them hard to find right now. I'll get to try his out and decide, hopefully someday sooner rather than later.
Remember, though, the published velocities out of the pistol (American Rifleman reviewed the Ruger recently) fall far short of those from the SMG. The Rifleman saw 1663-1790 fps depending on ammo, representing a substantial drop in muzzle energy from that available in the SMG. This is with a 40 grain bullet, so we are talking .22 WMR ballistics. Not many would rely on that for defensive carry in the woods against critters that may require it, nor as a "social" round as the late great Col Cooper liked to call them. It would make a fun little ground squirrel gun, assuming it's accurate enough. The Rifleman's example wasn't, though, averaging 2" groups at 25 yards. I have revolvers that will half that all day long, and they are still quite challenging for use on such small critters. That's maybe acceptable coyote accuracy, but not nearly enough oomph to consistently put them down. Nonetheless, interesting little round. Just not sure of its real world application for us civilians with no SMG's, relying on a pistol as the platform. |
I will type more in a bit as I have experience in both (Obvious fro my other post) and found the pistol to be accurate for me. I do not have the Ruger though, I have the FN.
Not my idea of an everyday carry piece, but the fact it takes the same as the SMG would be efficient if the need arouse to have both. Not an ideal home defense choice either as I’d be worried about wall penetration etc. |
Oh and while I save the brass, I’ve heard it’s very difficult to reload. I don’t have any experience, just have seen it on forums etc.
My stash of rounds for it is pretty extensive so not a real concern for me. |
I'm looking forward to hearing of your experiences with this nifty little round.
Oh, and according to the Rifleman article, ammo costs should come down dramatically, as well as availability increasing. Many manufacturers look like they have, or are going to, jump on this bandwagon. |
I would bet with Ruger making a more affordable unit there will be more buying as a curiosity or plinker. Even 1600fps out of a handgun is going to shoot pretty flat with little recoil.
The PS90 should have a little better speed with the longer barrel than the P90. On a side note, my daughter and I both use a P90 when we play airsoft out in the woods. For that it is great. Everything is inside your forearm. |

Late post on the topic but I have both a PS90 and FiveSeven. I love both of them, they are incredibly easy to shoot with minimal recoil and muzzle rise, kids love shooting them. They are dead accurate but I haven’t tested them at any real distance, and I’ve only shot them outside so I can’t comment on muzzle flash indoors. Outdoors I wouldn’t say they have excessive muzzle flash or noise. 50 rounds on the PS90 and 20 rounds on the FiveSeven give you great capacity. My only complaint is that I would personally give the FiveSeven a 7/10 in terms of ergonomics, it doesn’t fit my hand very well but that’s a personal thing. Also the reason I don’t own any Glocks. Neither was cheap but I would buy both again.
Also ammo can be had for about $0.35/round if you are willing to order online, particularly 500 rounds or more. Small boxes are typically on the shelf at our local sporting goods and gun stores. |
