This is not a BBQ gun. This is a Manhattan 5th Ave Bar Mitzvah gun.

C'mon, guys - that's just a standard Peacemaker, a single action Colt in .45 Colt. The muzzle looks so "big" because the barrel walls are so thin. These are very small guns by today's standards, chambered in a big bore, relatively low pressure caliber, so the cylinder and barrel didn't have to be all that stout.

Stijn, my ex father in law found one of those when he was a kid (just after the war had ended). It had been dropped in a field along with some ammunition. Some time later it was handed in but he told me he had a lot of fun playing with it before that happened.

What's an original WW2 one worth now?

I know a guy near me that has several... and a few of hitlers sowing machines and assorted tidbits... oh yeah and about 50 webley revolvers including a prototype and a VC winners webley

I think they are more expensive in the USA due to NFA regs then here in europe where a lot of em live in collectors hands (unneutered)

When I was about 16 years old (40+ years ago) I met the father of a girl I was dating. He was a Vet from the WW2 and he was collecting a pension from Germany (so he was regular army not SS). Interesting guy and he had multiple collections of all sorts of things. Port, classic western revolvers, swords, 16th century plate armor suits etc and it was all legit. No replicas or anything that had been plugged. The whole house was full of that stuff and he had a big walk in safe in his den. All of the firearms were stored there. He showed me what was inside and it looked like he could equip a small army! Mostly German WW2 stuff but he also had every version of the Lee–Enfield. Since the law changes in Australia we can't have collections like that anymore so I often wonder what happened to his. (He died about 9 years ago)

Police firearms officer told me they estimate only about 5% to 10% of guns got handed in, in Australia.

When the rules changed in who knows how many didn't get handed in, in NZ, but the supplies of 250mm plastic pipe with ends to be glued on ran dry the first weekend

I can't dispute what you're saying but 5% to 10% sounds really low... But there were no reliable records of what was out there before the buy back so it's possible.

There's one thing I do know for sure. The criminals seem to have no problems getting their hands on guns.

Hey, your dad looks like "Captain Benjamin L. Willard" from Apocalypse Now in this photo!

I hope he's still with us and doing well.

Unfortunately not… he passed away back in June 2020 after a short battle with lung cancer. But I did find some great pics in his shop like this one that I had never seen until very recently.

One of the family spoons, Winchester model 1894 in .38-55 with the hexagonal barrel. Purchased new by my great great grandfather.
