So clever. It's got that "why didn't I think of that?" vibe! |
I did a Texas hill country ride with lower gears a couple weeks ago and gearing seemed perfect. I only had to go to first gear a couple times right at the top of some big climbs. Front chainring is 46 and cassette is 10-36. I lose the 14 and 16 tooth cogs I get with the 10-28 cassette but when I ran a 2x set up, I'd also lose at least one small cog when running a 11-28 on the Shimano set up. So I'm happy with the 1x set up.
In this pic, I'm running 28mm tires (measure 30) vs the 30mm (measure 32) on the original build. I wanted to get it as light as possible for the hill country rides but now that I've tried it, I'm going back to 30mm for all rides. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1776884957.jpg |
Bought a parts bike over the weekend to help with my Rollfast build. 1959 Schwinn Hornet. She's a beauty :D

This photo surfaced recently. It's me :D Summer of 1969 with the Moon landing, Vietnam War, Woodstock, and Charlie Manson going on in the background ... This was my brand new Schwinn Collegiate 5-speed bought with my paper route money. First lightweight bike. Within 2-3 years, I upgraded to a Schwinn Continental 10-speed with drop bars, a few homebuilt road bikes using various frames and parts and then a Schwinn Paramount in 1975.

For tonight's entry, I present a snippet from John's YT channel and his classic road bikes- up for interpretation is a 1960's carlton frame. Blue flaked paint, chrome lugs, chrome fenders, etc.
For best viewing, click on the link and hit pause as quickly as you can hit pause to see the steerer tube, front lugs and fenders. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/upyWAJcr0Jg?si=cbEi6OII3J1jMzGm&start=502" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe> For me.... Impractical. Too old. Beautiful, but not practical, like a 50's 356a roadster or something. So then... <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/PkaGY2xuT3s?si=wR3qygW26aV_0Rfg&start=1" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe> Here's the effect, sans flake, yet, modern applicability. My question, anyone sprayed tinted clear on chrome? I'd love to do this custom. I want a 54 frame, 650b touring setup, blue, but modern. |
This is what I'm sort of looking for. Philly 2026- this whole video is a fun watch. Here, we see Jeffrey Bock and a customer- (and Richard SCHWINN cameo) looking at a green frame. Modern, yet classic.

Chromovelato is its own thing, but I've done candy apple over copper wheel paint, and it was pretty cool-the Pog in my exercise room....

I might hit the Philly show next year. Seems like a fun gig. I missed out on a frame building jig recently. Not next time! |

^ The front bb freewheel makes some good memories! (I'm assuming that's what that is..)
For tonight's addition, I submit this: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/EBWylBM5PU4?si=dLW18O-F-uY4K4aO" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe> I squander my life in equal parts, ppot, yt-bike videos, me- building bikes, riding bikes, and now... fixing my cis on my 911, but I digress. For pet dream is to fly to Lhasa, then casually (casualty?) bike past everest, down to Khatmandu. I think that is over 2 miles downhill. For YT videos, Annapurna, and South America take the cake for awesome views. Transiberia too. But this Japanese video caught my eye tonight. It's much more approachable, reminds me of a twixt between Appalachia and the Great Divide. Some elements of East and West coast USA in Japanese form. Not nearly as epic as Tibet, but with much better food and polite drivers along the way. I would totally do this with the end of my journey being a "Blue wheel" bike check wherever they are :) Nevertheless, a well edited video with many little gems along the way. |

I wonder what happened to her bike!

I wonder how serious was she? Money buys nice things, but was it necessary to buy a DeRosa with what looks like Campy SR yet ride with tennis or running shoes?
