Anyone got one on an old steel frame?

ZLP 05-03-2013 09:06 PM

Chinese knock off frames are just as good as the big names! Oh wait... they're not.

I've been watching the nest up vids of this guy. Anyone sure about this? It seems he's putting something down on the road to cause the crashes. All in the same spot and sudden loss of traction. Looks like a silicone job to me. These guys were not going that much balls out.

Joe Bob 05-04-2013 04:04 AM

Nah, just a badly designed curve that needs to be ripped up and fixed. Two humps that allows an unweighting of the front end and then sudden regaining of traction.

The fact that there is a lot of activity there tends to distract and boom, road pizza.

And after a short dry spell, Cav scores another sprint win and the maglia rosa in stage 1 of the Giro. He had to come from 10th wheel, his leadout man had a gear shifting problem with about 600 m to go, but he took the win on . . . some bike or another, I forget, nothing special :-)

ZLP 05-04-2013 09:14 AM

Amazing! Still the fastest man on the fastest bike in the world! :)

I don't for a minute dispute that Specialized etal should enforce their trademark and that counterfeit bikes are plain wrong, but the buyers know they're getting fakes, at least until resale, which is where the real danger lies.

BUT I believe that Specialized et al greatly overstate the risk. The experience with these frames has been by and large that they are if anything overbuilt (ie too heavy) and don't frequently break. There are photos all over the web if you look of real "brand name" carbon bikes that have broken is similar fashion-its not just the fakes. There's a pretty infamous thread on rbr about a guy who claims his Parlee top tube just cracked on its own-imagine how that could happen:rolleyes:.

And bikes like Novation et al are basicly open mold Chinese bikes with a house brand.

I'm not saying that any of these bikes are equal to a S works Tarmac or a Cervelo or BMC or...but there's really no reason for the industry to use fearmongering. No ax to grind here, I ride a non-knockoff Chinese frame that works well for the money, is nicer than my "older" Madone, but no, not as sweet as any of my steel bikes (tho I ride it more because it performs better and is disposable).

Carbon has a very bad failure mode-it disintegrates, as opposed to metals, which bend, so yeah the failures look and are particularly gnarly.

^^^ Who really knows the story on the china carbon frames but I don't doubt there's some copies or perhaps rejects leaked out the back of the legit factories.

Anyhow, I was an early adopter of the carbon frames in MTB with using a Kestrel CSX hardtail (not the first versions). Granted I was riding harder and physically better conditioned back then, but that frame took some serious hits. Chipped and all, was terrific.

So just last week I started a serious look into the carbon MTB FS frames by Santa Cruz. Will find the link on the tech section later but you should see them give the factory brutal and stress test videos. I'm convinced. BTW: Santa Cruz is late to the carbon frame market yet something must have made them go for it. As for the chinese produced frames... I just don't want anything to do with them or a company having them made there. To each their own.

Joe Bob- Might be a good time to sell out the old bike parts pile and get that Trek.

Used disc setup from a 1971 Lemon Peeler.

I really don't understand the location of the water bottle? They must like eating dirt, not that you don't already on the trail, but how hard is it to reach way under there while bumping and hoping over the rough stuff or the single track.
