Curt,

I forgotten to add that you must find the OMAS ring bolts. I am not sure if they were Ti or super light alum/alloy? I run alum water bottle Alen bolts on all my bikes except on my current bike. Finally I smart up and save money. Hell, I even have old school ti bottle cages (the wire looking type) and the guys were laughing at me last Saturday because I lack CArbon cages. I spend lot of my summer job money chasing super lights parts. It certainly made me faster, but so were all the others without them. No matter how I tried, they always made me suffered and drag me up the hill like a dead dog with tongue hanging past my 1R stem.

Is that going to be money no object vintage build? if it is, then you must bone up on all the super light alum parts.

Look at that "little Rabbit". He looks so comfortable on that bike climbing on that big 42(?) ring.

Ok- while on the subject.. Giro d'Italia. Trick trivia. Who was the first American to win it?

Giuseppe Enrici (born January 2, 1898, Pittsburgh, United States - died September 1, 1968, Nice, France) was an Italian professional road racing cyclist. The highlight of his career was winning the 1924 Giro d'Italia.

As I mentioned, trick trivia. Technically he was an American.

I ride new TTT stems today. There is no need to talk about the Campy Stupid Record is there? They simply are indestructible, not to mention they are the prettiest cranks ever made. Including today's ugly but super light units. People broke the Super Record Ti BBs. I remember seeing a picture of Laurent Figon, "The Professor", sitting on the side of the road holding his Johnson due to the broken Ti BB. I heard people talking about it breaking on them in our club, but never seem it happened personally. The steel ones are super strong that I know for sure.

The question isn't about the 1R or SR components, it's about the LeMond branding on them. He didn't have a line of bikes at the time (1984-85) as far as I know. So what were they for? Maybe he was selling individual components with the Team LeMond pantograph?

Nice tip on the OMAS bolts Will not be using a SR titanium axle. Had one when new and it lasted less than a year due to heavy galling on the bearing surfaces. This isn't exactly a cost-no-object build, but OTOH, my wife knows nothing (and will no nothing) of my budget for this little project either

Another nice 1R, but a bit blingy for a serious build:

Some trivia: the Huffy team bikes were actually built by Serotta (US custom builder now known as Saratoga), with the exception of the one that Hampsten is on in that photo, taken at the '88 Giro, which was built by Land Shark (another US custom builder).

Pretty standard practice: Lance Armstong's time trial bike in his first TdF was a Lightspeed tri bike painted blue with Trek decals.

Last year while "LightWeight" wheels have been crushin' it, many teams relabeled the wheels!!!

I was just going to post that! Land Shark is a builder here in the valley where we live. Absolutely great guy and an avid rider. Also, his wife rides as fast as hell....

We are pretty fortunate. There are at least 4 custom builders in our valley.

The custom builders do seem to be a dying breed with the advent of carbon splinter everything now...

you think he's fast now, back when he was a whippersnapper, he was even faster. We use to hang out at this guy's place after the ride and check out his frames with crazy paint schemes that were really not normally compared to single color frames of the time. I remember seeing the first one on our ride. It caught all kinds of attention. he does make some very nice frames. Come and think of it now, I would not expect less of a paint job from a guy who went to the Art Center. I know nothing about the Art Center back them.

One the midwest's best builders was/is Matt Assenmacher. He apprenticed with Bob Jackson in Leeds, England. I had a frame built in the late 70's. At that time, he was building bikes for Sue Novara who was the best woman sprinter in the US for many years. They were disguised as Schwinn Paramounts. I think there's still one hanging in his shop.

Dang - small world, isn't it? The worst person in the universe to draft off is his wife, jenny. She's about 95 pounds soaking wet and can climb like a cat with hot sake enema. Absolutely zero wind drag so you kill yourself keeping up with her speed wise, then it's your turn at the front and it feels like you already took a pull - LOL!
