Jim- I'm going to take a 'look' at a Look KG66 frame and fork only. My first venture into an early carbon road bike. One that I'll take some extra close inspection. Not a bike I would plan to pounce on but perhaps for some fun group rides. If its a go, for now I have enough parts (less headset and BB) to at least make it a rider. Yet, I don't want to change a headset out a second time around for this type of bike. Any thoughts on what they originally were equipped with? Campagnolo or Stronglight?

These are RARE!!

Came into my friends bike shop in the Hamptons. Apparently....P/O just GAVE them to the new owner because he was getting old with his wife and retiring back to Europe! Hand stitched leather onto the frames from craftsmen in France!

^^Very thoughtful of the folks donating to the bike shop. Thanks for sharing. Bikes look choice but not really that special. Dig the protective tube sleeve's but not so sure I'd want them or that color of leather. First I've seen with that color of saddle. Typical was a brown or black Brooks B66. Owners must have cherished them, condition appears excellent.

Anyhow I have the same, a mid-1960's Raleigh DL-1 (Tourist). Sturmey Archer IGH / 3peed. The rod brakes are a hoot and don't work to hardly. Worse are the steel rims and zero brakes in the rain. Just part of the charm. Its like the Ford model T of bikes. I think they first came out in 1939. I could be wrong and not a junkie for them. That said, its a quirky cool bike that belongs in any collection or guest loaner, pubster, etc.. They get more attention than a $15k modern CF racer... seriously. Go figure.

Identical replicas, (India produced) were being sold up until very recently called the Flying Pigeon. Parts interchange.

Values are all over the place. I just noticed one on CL - nice original for $250 O.B.O. and then there's a NOS 1939 that's been listed forever on Fleabay for $15,000. Mine was $40 and its not for sale. Surprisingly, if one ask around and out the countryside, there's lots of them stashed or forgotten of in barns. Smart farmers must have liked them for some sort of reason. They're lighter weight than the typical electro forged beastly Schwinns of the day but just as sturdy and robust. cheers!

Thanks for the info Intake!

Actually not given to the store, brought in BY customer whom the his and her bikes were given to. Wanted them cleaned up and dialed in. You're absolutely right about those brakes! LOL!

I think I'm gonna start trolling Ebay for my own set! Didn't realize availability was so good!

Nothing says 'The Hamptons' quite like a leather-covered bike frame

Hmmm, what is the drive system on this? Shifter with no freewheel or apparent internal drive rear hub.

Looking at the double chainstay, I wonder is there is an internal-geared front 'hub' incorporated into the BB/crank.

Here you go. Example of an original in Chicago for $250 o.b.o.. This one has been available for awhile. (notice the seller mentioning the brakes could use a tune-up.... LOL.) A little corrosion is just fine and adds character.

Vintage Raleigh Tourist ( Brooks Saddle) bicycle

Different areas of the country go nutz for them and some sit like an old dog. Hipster javi guzzlers have driven the prices upward to ridiculous. Used to find them for a low $10 to $40 tops. Riding one is unlike anything else. Relaxed angles, inefficient position for pedaling, lazy turning but what a smooth ride. They are conversation pieces and not really for the 'Tourist'.

If the rims don't have corrosion, its a very fair buy. I did find a source for aluminum hoops at $50 each. They're specific for the rod brake calipers set-up. I've yet to get a pair but on my want list. (Like I mentioned not that into them to chase for).

Found the site on the copy version of Raleigh's. The Flying Pigeon is China made. For some reason, I thought there was some made in India but could be wrong. A year ago, some fellow was selling a few brand new and sort of recall he stated were made in India. Bid's were ending up in the $400 to $450 range. http://www.theflyingpigeon.com/

British 3 speed only tour. Flask required. http://www.3speedtour.com/

First ride with quill pedals and toeclips in 20+ years today (on the vintage Gitane). Odd feel at first, but after 10 miles or so, they became familiar and quite comfortable. I think I like them. They're staying on that bike for sure

I scored this guy for a pretty good price on CL today! Pretty basic as far as the goodies go, but I'm pretty basic myself.

I'm wanting to ride this beast more.. Advice on a comfy saddle and a couple of bottle cages? I've already got new hoods and bar tape on it.
