Ok. Hope I don't forget all my responses:
Angela- Thanks for the link. I am going to look into that. Charlie- SC does get snow closer to the mountains but not here in the middle of the state. RWebb- I use the term Jackson Hole because I thought everyone would realize what you pointed out. I was not set on staying in Jackson the entire trip. Someone may have a suggestion of a restaurant or thing to see in one of the other towns that Jackson Hole encompasses. Downhill skiing will not be done. I am not that coordinated. I have only been downhill skiing once and I don't fancy having my 12 year old learn on such a large slope. We have thought of tubing as a alternative. We like hiking as a family so renting shoe shoes or XC skis and seeing some of Yellowstone and the Tetons sounds great. The park rangers do offer guide service through some of the parks. Dog mushing is at the top of my list of activities. That is truly an experience you can't get everywhere. I am curious if anyone has used any of the tours through Yellowstone. There are a couple different companies to choose from that run the treaded vehicles.

No better place to learn to ski than out west. Plenty of base areas that have gentle grades. Lessons done by people who really know what they are doing, and you can actually progress as the day goes on.

We were in Jackson/Tetons/Yellowstone last year in late Oct-early Nov. This was the last week they allowed cars through. There was light snow on the ground with very fresh bear tracks, partially frozen ponds, buffalo with snow covered backs. We shot video of a pack of wolves feeding on a fresh kill (from a distance). Wildlife was everywhere and it was breathtakingly beautiful scenery. This was our favorite road trip ever.
The frigid north guys can tell you that wool hats, gloves, boots, a good hooded coat, and plenty of layers will keep you comfortable out there in winter.
