IWB Holster

Well, now that it looks like the Socialist Republik of Illinois might actually get CCW, what are some of your favorite holsters?

It has to fit, and be interchangeable between an Officer's ACP, and a Combat Commander sized 1911.

I'm looking at the SuperTuck Deluxe from Crossbreed Holsters, and the belt to go with it.

Do you see any problems with it? What do you use, and why?

Thanks in advance!

Simply Rugged is worth a look. I really like what I've used of theirs.

I bought the supertuck based on the advice of this forum. I absolutely love it.
One piece of advice that was sent my way... and it is soooooo true.

Galco Stow and Go. I have one for my 1911s. I carry a Glock now and got a Galco with a thumbreak to keep it from sliding out. I wear it at 6 o'clock and you could barely see me print if I bend down.

Here's my favorite with my Kimber 3" barrel .45. It's a Mitch Rosen and will hold a 5" barrel .45:

Check out this thread that is basically the same question. It mentions pretty much every IWB holster that I've ever heard recommended.

I've got the crossbreed supertuck. I just wear a regular leather belt. I've worn it with the full size version of my gun (XDM 9mm) and now the same holster with the compact version of my gun.

Since the 3" barrel seems to bottom out in the holster, does the holster cover the trigger of the 5" barrel when you carry that?

A benefit of the supertuck is that it won't care about barrel length for most guns.

The barrel will protrude through. It just looks like that from being carried.

I had a few Friends recommend the SuperTuck, and it seems to be well liked here too. i just gotta get used to wearing a belt now, and tucking in my shirts. I guess no more hiding the gut, or a diet is in my future.

You don't have to tuck your shirt when wearing a supertuck. I've done it twice, but 99% off the time my shirt is untucked.

a full size 1911 inside my pants? I don't think so. WAY too big for me. My Walther PP or my 1903/08 Colts? Sure. Nice and slim. I wear my 1911 in yer face, in a shoulder holster.

Timely thread, I'm finally doing my CCW on Saturday. I've had the Crossbreed holsters recommended by multiple people and expect to go that route, I need to check it out in person first and my CCW instructor happens to have one.

Anyone carry a commander size 1911 IWB? Too heavy?

Don't forget about a quality belt too. Nothing worse than have a good holster defeated by a floppy belt or one that can twist under stress. I have a pretty thick and wide Wilderness belt. I almost feel like the belt itself would make a decent last-resort weapon. Just came back from Safeway, where I wore my Glock on the belt in the small of my back. You could probably lift me off the ground by the pistol grip, that belt and holster are so solid.

Once in a while. My Springfield Champion is .25" shorter than a Commander. It sure is comfy, but with 8+1 rounds it still weighs more than my Glock with 13+1 rounds. I have a Commander size SIG 1911, but it hasn't passed my range tests for carry duty yet. I'll run some better ammo through her on Friday. Didn't like the cheapo Russkie stuff I used last Fri.

The Crossbreed holster is a good choice. I used one when I carried a 1911. The only problem I had was that large caliber weapons are heavy, and living in Fl, I wear shorts most of the year. This resulted in me not carrying as often as I should have. For the past year I've switched to a .380 Kahr and a pocket holster and I have it with me more often than not. I'm not overly concerned with caliber size, I just want something in case I can't run a way quickly enough

For my G17 I have an IDPA-style holster and belt, and a custom drop holster with a provision for my light and a belt, and a FBI-style jacket holster.

For my G26 I have an ankle holster and a back-of-the-pants clip.

For my little .380 Taurus I have a belt holster that looks like a cell-phone holder and a pocket holster.

I feel like I have something appropriate for any situation. As I am currently licensed outside of Illinois, I have tried all of these systems out at some time or another.

I do have a few holsters I would send for free to a fellow Illinois Pelican that are generic style nylon holsters that don't fit my spoons well.

Check out Ed Buffaloe in Texas. He makes very nice IWB holsters that are lined with pigskin. Not cheap, but they are reasonable considering the quality!

Hat's off to you guys that can get along with a .45 in a IWB holster. Even an alloy j frame .38 gives me a backache after a few hours (and on a hd Galco belt). I have a great Jackass shoulder holster for a 1911. A few hours with it and and I'm drooping. Is it because I'm old and of low body mass (60, 160 lbs)? How do you feel at the end of the day carrying?
I have carried the same gun daily almost 30 years, but it's considerably smaller than what's been discussed.
I guess I'm fortunate that my work environment allows me to keep 'several' guns around the place.
