Stone Heads
a couple I just finished, I really think they look better in real life, I need to get the lighting and shadows in this stuff.
The Easter Island Head, Moai, is carved from a 85 lb piece of Limestone The Angel Fish is carved from a 30 lb piece of Calcite. It really is cool in real life, looks like the inside of an Orange. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Nice work, Dean.
I used the same Tiki for my business logo on some tee shirts back in '06. Very cool... ![]()

Dean,
I'm curious as to the tools you use to make you sculpture and how you even begin to rough out your design. Then the process of final shaping and smoothing. I continue to be amazed

The horse head started out from a 500bc bronz thing and morphed from there, nobody will ever see it as the same. The main tools on these and the Horse Head in the last posts are air and electric, die grinders. Then files, some diamond files, then sand paper, the Horse Head and the Fish I used 2000 wet and dry on the final, then Brass wool, then some stuff called "Akemi", then some clear wax. Hammer and chisels on the horse and fish would shatter them. I even used power tools mostly on the Easter Island head because I had them. Then files and diamond files. No sandpaper on that one. I have a piece of Blue Marble about 42" by 22" by about 7" thick I am trying to get an idea for. Thanks again for the compliments, in March I will have been doing stone work for a year. and now I have to enter the house through the Garage door to get my head in. If I sell anything the money will be spent getting a bigger garage door. |
