That car has been in the showroom of the Barris shop for years. I used to eat lunch at the Baja Fresh across the street all the time.

Figured that. If it was a 4 speed it would be one of 96. Not sure how many autos were made.

$325k is about 5x what that 442 would sell for in a sane world. I sure wish that I had some collectible cars to sell, these prices are truly insane.

Wasnt that 442 the one with the FACTORY aluminum block?
I think it had a factory aluminum rear end housing also.

Definitely not your dad's Oldsmobile

I don't recall them talking about an aluminum block or rear end, but they did point out the manual transmission.

I wonder what I would have got for my old Bugeye Sprite?

I noticed this week while promoting this car there are Ford badges just ahead of the doors. I've never seen those before.

Wow, I wonder what my buddy's W32 is worth? It has the hood and all that other jazz. When you get on it, it sounds like it would suck a seagull in through the hood.

No aluminum block. It did have an aluminum intake. The 1970 W-30 was the high point of all 442's. 370 seriously under rated horsepower, 500 ft/lbs torque. It's Old's version of the Chevelle SS LS6 or Skylark GSX. I think the 68 and 69 Hurst Olds had more rated horsepower but the W-30 were very under rated. I remember when you could get a real nice one for well under $10K.

The aluminum rear end, option W27. They're worth a small fortune these days.

Ok, of the old's sold this weekend did have the aluminum block.

Here is a second reference

"Was at the Barret-Jackson today(it was cold out!) and saw a 1970 If I remember correctly, 442 with an factory experimental all aluminum big block Olds engine in it!
Never knew such an animal existed, have a feeling it's going to bring big bucks. Going back Tuesday and will take some pics of the claimed factory aluminum engine restored 442. Anybody know anything about this car???"

Experimental Aluminum big block...... - ClassicOldsmobile.com

Dont remember which car had it though.

ok, little more research, yep I am avoiding real work.

"Upgraded with a rare all aluminum Olds 455. This type of engine was on the July 1969 issue of Hot Rod magazine in Can Am racing trim, complete with dual turbo chargers. The aluminum 455 was developed and raced in the Can Am Series to test performance and durability. While the aluminum block never made it to production passenger cars, aluminum intakes and a few other components did. The engine was completely and properly rebuilt utilizing a factory Olds steel crankshaft and all internal components are new as well. "

One thing to keep in mind: most of the scottsdale Saturday big $$$$ cars and very near perfect. As in the best of the best, flawless, better than new.

That's why they draw 10x as much as a thursday 'driver quality" car or cars at BJ's other auctions.

Too many folks watch that show and say "hey, my 71 malibu poser SS must be worth a hundred grand too".
Unfortunately it doesn't work that way.
