selling car question
I have been working on selling my camaro project. I have a few ethical questions on this.
Ok so I advertise the car for sale and people come out of the woodwrok for this thing. All kinds of offers for trades plus cash. I am not interested in that so I hold firm at my price. I body shop owner comes down monday looks at the car . He says he likes it but is not interested in the interior nor the top as they are not the right colors. He asks how much without those items. I give him a price. he thinks about it and then says he will get back to me. I say Ok and move on to the next looky lue. He texts me the next day and says he wants the car but gives no firm date for pickup nor a deposit. I continue to show the car and have since gotta few very interested parties. My neighbor now stops down today and says he will let me know tonight but says he thinks he is going to take it at full asking because he understands the work done to it and he does not want to bicker with friends/neighbors. He is in his 70's me in my late 30's not that really matters just gives you perspective. So who gets the car?? I have nothing in writing beside some texts from the body shop owner that says he wants it but again nothing on paper nor deposit. HELP!

If no deposit, then no deal. I might make a handshake deal with someone I trust, but you don't even have that. Sell to the first person that gives you the money.

Money talks. If no deposit is left, they aint interested.
What do you really think is going to happen if you sell the car and someone else doesnt get it? Like they are gonna come to your house all huffin and puffin?

Any serious buyer would show up with cash and a trailer.
Let everyone know there are multiple interested parties. Tell them highest offer with payment in next 24 hours gets the car. |

The first guy w with the cask gets the car unless you'd prefer to sell top the neighbor so you can get rid of the whole thing at asking price
You didn't mention a verbal agreement to holds out four the body shop guy and said that there's no deposit, therefore no commitment |

I have held cars on a handshake when the person says "I will be back on ___ with the payment" with the understanding that if they are not back by when they say they will be and I have another offer I will call them as a courtesy to let them know the car is being sold. Never got to that point. I would give my neighbor more consideration than a stranger.

Fist person to put either a significant deposit or full negotiated price in your hand

The second part to the statements above is clarifying your position. If someone says "I will take it", you say "I will hold it for 24 hours, if you have not paid in full by noon tomorrow I reserve the right to sell it to another party".
If someone inquires about the car during the 'waiting period' tell them "the car is sold conditional on payment in full, but if the buyer does not pay me in full by 4PM tomorrow, then you can buy the car. Please call me at 4PM tomorrow if you are interested". Do not let someone say "I will take it", and then let them think they have a week to get you the money.

Echoing what has been said--first with deposit or cash is the buyer. If someone looks and says they will take it, but need to get the money together--you set the time line for them returning--"OK have the money by "X" time"
I have sold (3) cars in the past 4 years and have heard it all--"I will definately take it, I will be back with the money" only to never be heard from again.

Money talks, BS walks. The only firm sounding deal is the neighbor. All the others, by your description, sound like they are really saying "not that interested". If someone wants it, they will make it happen. First to show with money wins, unless you make some deal to hold for a set period of time.

Having been down this rode, time to move on. The biggest issue is your distance and inability to deal with the sale in person. You would have a person you met, a receipt, and your set.

I would not hold it for anyone or imply that I will hold it for anyone. As other have said, one way or the other, it's for sale right up until the moment someone buys it. You can choose to hold it for someone for a short period of time on a handshake but I really don't advise it on a car like that. If it was some little transportation car, maybe.
A collectible muscle car project for considerable dough is the kind of thing someone can quickly change their mind about once they get home and think about the bills they need to pay. Reality is a biotch. You are asking fair value for it, right??
