Best Wheel Bearing Grease!!
Hey guys,
About to re-install my front and rear wheel bearings on my 1988 911 Carrera and I was curious on what bearing grease others out there prefer to use? I use the car as a daily driver with an occasional visit to the track so I do not think I need anything too high temp? Any suggestions? Also is there an exact amount of bearing grease I should look to use or maybe a rule of thumb in packing the bearings? As always, Thanks for the input.. Cheers, CMV |

Put a blob in the palm of your hand and keep pressing the open end of the cage into it until it oozes out the other side. Then rotate it 45 degrees and do it again. Repeat until it is packed.

Most wheel bearing kits come with a small satchel of OEM grease. So if in doubt use that.
But I always use Slick 50 grease. It's great IMO... I've never had an issue using it.

The rear bearings are sealed and do not need grease added. But, you might do well to order an extra rear bearing in case you destroy one the first time you try to install it or the hub.
As for the front bearings, there are many opinions on the best grease. I've used Valvoline Super Syn with no problems, but you might also try Mobil 1 Synthetic. These are available in cartridges so that you can use a grease gun to load a bearing packing tool. These are much faster and cleaner than packing the bearings by hand. If you decide to pack them by hand, then Liqui Moly CV joint grease is good also. |

treat the grease like picking up dog poo. Put your hand in a plastic bag and scoop up the grease. Work it all though the races, and leave a good film on the inside and outside.
Slap it in, slightly over torque, back off and tighten to torque. That's what I do. rjp

Klüber greases get very good reviews among endurance racers it seems.

Okay sounds like a plan. After packing the bearings and the hub is there any other places I should be packing with grease like for example under the grease cap or maybe inside the hub between the bearings? Or no?
Also any suggestions to ease in the installation of the bearings would be great considering the experience and knowledge you guys have. I am a newbie to Porsche's but I am loving them thus far so I would love to learn any little tricks others have. I always find it interesting how people mickey-mouse things! Ha As always thanks guys, Cheers, CMV |
