To all those that did and all those that do...thank you. May the day that the sacrifices you now make are no longer asked of you come soon.

A couple of photos from the American cemetery at St. Laurent above Omaha Beach, taken Memorial Day 2011.

The statue is titled "American Youth Rising Above the Waves"

A German cemetery near Verdun, WW I boys.

And a French ossuary at Ferme de Navarin , west of Verdun, with the bones of over 10,000 Frenchmen.

Bjorne.....thank you so much for those photos. I am going to save those as a reminder of the sacrifices made in the name of freedom.

Very pleased to see these hallowed grounds are maintained so well. It's the very least we can do for all who served.

Thank you again, sir....

You are very welcome, Baz. All the American cemeteries that we visited are meticulously maintained by our gov't.

Good to know, Bjorne.

I don't mean to pry but were these taken while you were visiting Europe or do you reside there?

Very excellent photography - and once again thanks for posting. Many of us (including me) have never been to Europe and appreciate what is shared in this cyber community.

These photos were taken on a 3 week trip to France, Luxembourg, and Belgium. My uncle and I took a couple of months to plan a route to make the most of our time (and make sure there was some shopping times for the wives). We met a lot of wonderful people on the trip, visited many powerful battle sites like Bastogne, Douaumont, Flanders, Chateau Thierry, Malmedy, and, of course, the landing sites at Normandy. We spent time at 5 American cemeteries, some Brit and French, and one German WWI burial ground. All in all a fantastic trip.

Thanks for the explanation, Bjorne. That's the way to do it. So much history in the "old world" it's obvious you appreciate that aspect of travel.

My brother and his family vacationed in Italy last year but I don't think they visited anything more than the typical tourist spots.

Thanks again for your photos - they really give one pause - at any time - but especially this weekend.

All the best,
Baz
