Tooth bleaching - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

According to the wikipedia page above one of the possible side effects is "bleachorexia"

Good article about it here:
Bleachorexia: How the Quest for Pearly Whites Can Destroy Teeth - ABC News

The most amazing thing I learned in that article is that tooth whitening products in the US are one BILLION dollar industry! Amazing.

I avoid ingesting things I don't need for nutrition or pleasure. I guess having non-naturally white teeth is pleasurable to some.

This is a huuuuuge business as well. We have many dental customers that do this procedure.

I agree that "too white" teeth make a person look fake. My teeth are not even close to perfect and I'm good with that. You don't like it, don't talk to me.

I've always had great teeth and learned to smile at an early age.....

I started using those Crest white strips the past couple years and they seem to help keep my pearly's bright.
(me with my Mom):

I think people should do whatever they feel comfortable with in terms of enhancement of their physical attributes. I have no problem with women who undergo cosmetic surgery as long as it is done properly and doesn't (excuse the expression) stick out like a sore thumb!

Having three dead top teeth in the front of my mouth, they had gotten dark over the years and very noticable. I elected to bleach my teeth to whiten them up. Looks much better now.

Baz, you're a lucky guy, movie star smile there.

A930, I know what you mean. If there is really something wrong with your teeth/smile, (like the dead teeth you refer to), it can make a world of difference in your confidence to fix it. I believe that it can actually change someone's personality for the better because they are more likely to be smiling and feel self confident.

My dad told me about how when he was young and broke, (and his teeth were messed up), he never smiled in photographs. It was more like a smirk. Once he could afford to get better dentures/bridges, he smiled anytime he felt the inclination. Decent looking teeth are essential, I just think that anything unnatural, such as over-whitened teeth, looks like schit.

Rode down in an elevator with Joe Theisman a few weeks ago. Didn't know who it was until shortly after. Chatted about golf (he was on his way to Taylor for custom fitting). Only thing I noticed was ridiculously white and razor straight teeth.

I don't have a problem with cosmetic enhancements. Be that hair color, teeth bleach, fillers, etc.

I always thought that if I quit smoking my teeth would whiten. Hasn't happened. So maybe I'll try the strips. My teeth are very strong, in the sense that I've had zero cavities ever, do you suppose the bleaching strips hurt that aspect?

How can anyone stand the taste (and feel) of Hydrogen Peroxide? It makes me gag, cringe and dang near vomit. Tequila, too.

Half my day is filled with talking people out of bleaching their teeth the shades of toilet bowls. I think bleached teeth is the equivalent of double d implants of the 90's. I cant say it any better then this article from the onion:

If your teeth are decent to begin with and natural, what is wrong with that?
Reminds me of people detailing chevy cavaliers and Armoralling the tires to a crazy shine.
Its still a Cavalier and will never pass for a ferrari.
Is one supposed to get laid more because your shade of teeth are whiter?

That's been my experience.

Seriously, a clean mouth with white teeth is a turn-on for some of us. Sorry.

Teeth cleaned yesterday by hygienist, & I just rec'd my latest supply of whitening gel in the mail this afternoon.
'Had trays custom made back in 2010. I'm happy.

Lubey is right on. Some places folks cannot afford to get their teeth fixed. Whitening strips don't help if you are gap toothed to begin with.

I have a thick upper lip so my teeth are not visible.

Anybody with white flashy teeth I would think they are trying to sell me something
- reminds me of Madmen in the 1960's. Jaguar salesman and brylcream hair ....
you wonder where the yellow went when you clean your teeth with Pepsodent.
If you remember this last ad then you are on the wrong side of 50 yo.
