Ricer Trend

Sorry to all but I have to get this of my chest. I find the latest car-manufacturer trend of LED "angel eyes" running-lights on EVERY new model out there from SUVs to golf carts, to be the ricest, tackiest, most obnoxious, way to say "look at me, mine is new".
Am I the only one that sees this as the least complementing way of defining a whole era of cars?
It will be like the hairdos of the 80's, twenty years from now it will be, "Oh that is soooo 2013, I can't believe we had those on the car" Our cars will be the laughing stock of our children and grandchildren. It's even worse than impact bumpers... those where obligatory.
It was kind of OK when it was only on BMWs, now it is pure unadulterated, unfiltered, OEM RICE.
Cheers
MD

Audi may have started the trend, but I agree, they could be more subtle.

Not to pick nits, but I thought "rice" was over the top aftermarket non-performance crap?

Not sure if those LED's have a function or not... if nothing else they may make you more visible.

And... wow... I haven't hear "rice" in that context since before 2010

This coming form me, a 944 guy converted to a Miata guy.

Are you talking about "Angel Eyes" which is the ring around the headlight that was first popularized by BMW or are you talking about what I call headlight eye liner (which was first done by Audi) where they are putting a row of LEDs above or below the headlight. Either way, on the original, it's not too bad, but the copies, bleh!

I thought that it was an interesting touch when I first saw it on the Audis, not a bad look. New Lexuseses (Lexii) are coming with it, and it looks bad to me. What is even worse is when folks retrofit something to an older car.

Yes, I don't care for it much.

Yeah, I'm sure the ricer crowd is picking up on it, but I don't know that it's specifically a ricer thing since most of the cars that have it are brand new, stock Audi and Lexus.

WHat I've noticed is that I feel like I see fewer ricer cars around these days than I used to. I see lots of cars that are completely stock with silly ricer mufflers, and I still see cars with silly wings. I do occasionally see the full on ricer, but it's rare for me to see a car that's lowered with wheels, wing, muffler and bad body kit like I used to see daily. I am starting to see more VW with the "flush" look. I supposed this is slightly better. I haven't seen many with the crazy camber angles that I've seen in some pictures.

Thanks Masraum.

I thought it was to comply with some DRL law or something. No? Strictly fashion?

Simple running lights suffices to comply, the rest is ricer fashion...of the wrong kind, the OEM kind.

MASRAUM Your "eyeliner" term is perfect for this new type of "angel eyes"

Maybe in 50 years they will be sought after like tail fins on the 60s cars are sought after now. Just wait 50 years, they will be nostalgia!

No wait the cars of today are disposable cars. Never mind.

And this is exactly why I'm selling my 240SX. I was debating on buying another one to build for SCCA ITA, but every single one I come across is either beat to crap, or has been hacked up to the point at which it would take a monumental effort to make it acceptable to race.

Sorry for the slightly OT/first post rant. I promise I'm not (always) like this in person.

I also liked the push to start button on some of the newer high performance cars until they started showing up on kia's

I actually like this look on the Audi... on the Honda pilot that was behind me this morning on the way to work? Not so much!

However I do not think cool technology only comes on high price tag automobiles either.

I like the angel eyes, but not the eye liners. The eye liners have been a big success for Audi and that's why everybody is copying them.

I'm having a really hard time getting upset over headlights.

When you stack them up against shoddy body kits, goofy rims, fart-can exhausts, giant wings, and stereo systems that cost more than the car, headlights really are low on the list of annoyances.
