My youngest daughter and I were working on the interview questions last nite. How many in your family? Do you like dogs or cats, ranch or bleu cheese? Favourite color? What do you do, other than my daughter? It should be fun.
Maybe I will post his picture and get the Pelican opinion.
Interview?

Interview?

I know the greenie means you won't do the pic thing.

It does, doesn't it?

BTW, my step daughter never brought anyone home for a meeting. We met eventually, but I always figured it was their business. That might have had something to do with the fact that I chased one through the neighborhood on foot for a half hour. He lost me. He was lucky.

Another I showed up at his parents house and told them I was one stop away from the sheriff's dept. Never heard about that little bastard again. He was 18, she was 14.

Our family still talks about that one. The girl is 36 now.

It was all tongue in cheek Zeke. Interview is a word I used with the 23 y/o in jest when she told me she wanted me to meet her man.

If he were 18 and she 14 it would not be an interview, but an intervention followed by interrogation and then incapacitation.

as a young teen I went to take a girl out and meet her parents. Her dad made all sorts of threats so I said "What ever you say, we won't go out then." After that she was allowed out any day until anytime.

i am always confused why this is a tense moment for people.

<= 26 year old single dude who meets different girls parents on a pretty regular basis.

parents think i am awesome, and i would never bring around a girl to my parents who they wouldn't like either.

I'm sure I felt the same way when I was <=26.

Chime back in when you have an 17-18 yr old daughter and she brings home a guy for you to meet.

I'm not being snarky, it's just a bit different on the other side.

Years after my daughter brought home a guy, I ran into him at a local pub. He was with buddies and he recognized me. We chatted and he recalled how I treated him. He said I was not mean or rude, but he could tell it would be a bad idea to mistreat her.

It was prob lip-service to me and I couldn't care less. My mission was accomplished with clarity.

Sorry, but a 23 year old has no idea what he or she wants out of life - hopefully this is just a "hey I really like this guy and I think you guys need to meet since it's serious enough that your paths will inevitably cross anyway" kind of thing and nothing more (e.g. "hey, we're expecting!").

At that age one is old enough to make really bad choices and be stuck with the full ramifications of them as an emancipated adult. Sorry but that's reality. You've done your part preparing her and she's on her own now... You've got to accept that. Now here's the upside - we all went through that "stupid" age and survived it. Some of us actually made good decisions (by accident mostly) and some of us didn't (and paid for it) but we all survived. I'm sure your daughter (who is now an emancipated adult - don't forget this part...) will do fine and even if she makes a bad decision now, she'll survive it because of what you did for her as her dad.

All the best. I truly hope he's not a tatted-up, sideways hat wearing, pants-down-to-the-ankles-showing-underwear retard, there are far too many 20-something guys who are these days. If he's not and is a decent, respectable guy then give her a big hug and tell her you're proud of her judgement.

Good luck, hope it goes well.

This only serves to increase my anxiety.

Right.

Your "dates" bring you home to mom? That goes beyond "girlfriend" services- bet that cost ya.

He's not really nervous. He's just playing along here. Same way you are.

Ask him if he would like to come out in the garage to see your preserved testicle collection.

It's my favorite, some times they just make a run for it!

Daughter a moron? Why use such inflammatory language?

Love is blind and if she brought you home to me I would give her a white cane for Christmas.

Just having a light hearted thread with an experience that most people can relate to.

That is absurd. I did, my kids do...we get life.

To the OP, the best question is to ask him about his father. It all follows from there.

Update, the kid is alright. He is 26, not too old. He works in fiber optics sales. Speaks in complete sentences. Likes football. No visible tats or piercings. Treats my daughter well. He indicated a great deal of respect for his dad. Not much of a car guy but can work computers like a pro. His political views are oddly similar to mine, a strong streak of Libertarian. Very nice.
All in all, she could do much worse.

I found this to be very difficult...even after marriage, it is hard not to be critical. Just remember, if they get married...she has to live with him, not you.

See....in the end most girls who had a good Dad ultimately choose a guy who is like their Dad.

Over the years the more I've gotten to know my father in law the more striking it is how similar we are in many ways, not all of course, but many.
