Meet the parents

Tonite my 23 y/o daughter is bringing her boyfriend over to "meet the parents." It doesn't matter whether you are the parent or boyfriend this is a nervous moment. My daughter has pleaded that I behave and I assured her that I would try. I have sent her texts jokingly to remind her to tell him to have clean fingernails and no holes in his socks.
Cooking some burgers on the grill, hope to create a relaxed atmosphere and not an at-most-fear.
My youngest daughter and I were working on the interview questions last nite. How many in your family? Do you like dogs or cats, ranch or bleu cheese? Favourite color? What do you do, other than my daughter? It should be fun.
Maybe I will post his picture and get the Pelican opinion.

I so remember a few dates long long ago to pick up the girl. Some dads were nice some were trying to be overbearing.

Relax and act normal.

her Mom's WTF & who do think you are looks..
and James her cool Dad waiting for me in the P-lot as I went to work later..
hurt her..I kill you...and I understood he would..

Do you trust your 23 yr old daughter's judgement? The most important thing is if she likes him, who cares if he isn't your favorite person? And remember, many women are attracted to men similar to their dads. Not in a perverted way, I'm speaking of personality traits. And sometimes 2 similar guys don't get along too well at first.

I would recommend you not ask too many questions and let the sister and mom ask away. Just sit back and observe the conversation. Don't get too engaged with him, just be even keeled and don't rush to judge.

Talk it over with Mom alone after the evening and get her take. Most women have a decent gut about these things and guys tend to "size up" the other guy and miss the important stuff.

I like you're asking here. And I'm sure there will be many offers of how to intimidate. My offering is one way to accomplish said task.

Wow Rika, that was quite a first meeting. Nothing like being suprised at the front door. Congrats on the 32 years.

I was thinking of bringing home some EKG equipment to mock up a lie detector test. That may fall outside my daughters request for good behaviour.

Good advice Don, stay silent and stare alot. Got it. :0

But don't let anyone but him see the stare. Ha!

But seriously...for pete's sake, don't do the 2 fingers to your eyes then to him, as if you're watching him. If he doesn't realize you are already doing that, your daughter will make the choice for you and drop him.

If beers are involved, just hand him an unopened beer. Don't open it for him.

I guess I was lucky. My intro to my future in-laws was in their living room with comfy furniture and a gallon of chilled Rhine Wine. By the end of the evening we were all good friends. But I was military so maybe that helped. Thanks for the thread and the memories! Fun stuff.

You guys are funny.

I've never try to be intimidating about the whole thing, I rely on my Daughter for that. My Daughter can handle 99%. She'll let me know if the 1% needs tuning. She has a good eye for young men, in fact I've had two "what did I do wrong" calls from young men sent on their way. I liked both of them and was pulling for them 'cause they were/are genuinely good dudes. Happily, not my problem.

I do find a way to make sure that he knows that I know what he knows, nicely, on our way someplace, just he and I, always after the first meet.

My oldest daughter Olivia (Livi), now almost 17, started dating a 20 year old boy from the neighborhood some months ago. At first I was a bit hesitant but he turned out to be a splendid guy and we have socialized a lot this summer. I am now almost relaxed..

no no, I would make it a nice conversation, smile and soft "go ahead chopping off one finger. Give him 2 days to come up with my money. If still no money by then, call Vinny and the cleaner"
