Phony?? .....eh.........that's easy stuff for me. PETTY however is a whole 'nother ball game. PETTY for some people seem to never have a low limit. Even as I sit here middle-aged I'm somewhat still amazed at this particular human condition.......especially when it affects me.

I pretty much can't stand anyone calling me their "buddy" or "pal". From experience, thats the universal sign of a slimey person...

Hey, my mom worked at that hospital when I was a kid.
She was the switchboard operator. Had the speaker and ear piece and everything.
I can't imagine trying to explain that job to my kids .....

(No that ain't her, just an interweb pic I found)

Point well taken there, Ace......

I do that allot. I say hi Ace or Sport or pal or chief.
I do it because I run into people all day long and I'm TERRIBLE at remembering names.

If I hear a name, read it on a business card, and then write it down I'll remember it forever.
But if I just hear it or read it I won't remember it 5 minutes later.

I suppose instead of saying hey Buddy, how are you? I could thell them that I don't remember their name, but that might make them feel unimportant and possibly insulted.
I'd rather they think I'm slimey than have them think they aren't worth my time.

Oh oh oh, just thought of another zample. If i'm lucky enough to find and actually catch the attention of an employee at home despot and ask them where i can find something, they might answer "try isle 7 or 8".
Then the clown-hats have the gonies to hang a bell at the front door and ask people to ring it IF they got good service.
Which they typically do not.

If I ask the same question at a Lowe's, the employee will stop what they're doing and say "it should be over on isle 7. Come on, let's go find it".

Guess where I spend the most $$$$?

Everybody knows that when somebody calls you "buddy", "pal" etc. and they're not a close friend, it's because they've forgotten your name... chief.

I would respectfully suggest that you don't bother doing that, because you're not fooling anyone

(Although now that I'm thinking about it, I do use "man" not infrequently... uh-oh)

Cheers

d.

It's not what you say, it's how you say it and what you do. Most people can see through BS pretty quickly, but if you are sincere and back it up with action the actual words are much less important.

I don't dig the corporate script stuff so much. I really don't like it when I call some business, they ask for my name, then start calling me by my first name. Depending on the context, I will call them on it. You don't have to be a professional to act like one. More than once, I have told them that my friends call me Toby, you may call me sir or doctor.

That may sound bad, but I am also of the opinion that it does not cost anything extra to be nice, consequently, I am polite and nice. This is apparently fairly rare and surprising to some.

I went out to dinner at Scoma's in Sausalito on Sunday night, I recommend it highly, BTW. There was a woman with her elderly mother in a wheelchair. If you have ever been to Scoma's, you know it is a tiny little place. The woman had left one of the foot rests for the WC swung out to the side, with that foot on the ground and was trying to back out. I stopped her, lifted the little old lady's leg out of the way and locked the footrest in position, then put her foot on it. They thanked me and went on their way. Finished dinner, and got out front before the rest of my party. Two women that had been sitting at the next table were waiting outside, impressed that I had helped the lady and her daughter, the blonde one chatting me up pretty aggressively. She seemed to be quite disappointed when I told her sorry, I am married. I don't think she hears "no" all that often. It was really no big deal to help those people, I figured anyone would, but I guess maybe not.

Instead of Sport or Ace or Buddy a former boss of mine would call people whose names he forgot "Easy Money" and shake their hand and ask how they are doing. He got away with that a lot.
